What is the difference between blue and pink radiator fluid ?
The color of the coolant results from the dye used and does not directly affect its properties. The difference between blue and pink fluids lies mainly in their chemical composition: Blue fluids – are most often produced based on silicates. They are characterized by good protection against corrosion, but have a shorter shelf life (usually 2-3 years). Pink fluids – are usually based on organic corrosion inhibitors (OAT technology). They are more durable (up to 5 years) and more effective in protecting the cooling system, especially in modern engines. The choice of fluid depends on the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, which specify which formula is compatible with a given cooling system. Does the color of the radiator fluid matter ? The color of the fluid itself does not affect its performance, but it is important as a designation of the type of fluid and its chemical composition. Colors help users and mechanics more easily identify the type of fluid used: Green, blue – silicate-based, older technology; Pink, red, purple – OAT-based, modern organic formulas; Orange – often a mix of technologies (HOAT). It is important to always check the composition and compatibility of the fluid with the cooling system, instead of just following the color.
What fluid should be added to the radiator ?
You should always top up with a fluid that is compatible with the one already in the cooling system. If you are not sure of the type of fluid: 1) Check the vehicle manual – the manufacturer indicates the appropriate type of fluid (e.g. OAT, HOAT). 2) If in doubt, you can use universal fluids that are compatible with various formulas. 3) Avoid adding water, as this may reduce the properties of the coolant and lead to corrosion.
Can radiator fluids be mixed?
Mixing different cooling fluids is generally discouraged. If fluids differ in technology (e.g. silicate and organic), mixing them can lead to: Reduced protective properties, Formation of deposits in the system, Reduced cooling efficiency. If it is necessary to add another fluid, choose one that is compatible with the current one or use a universal fluid. If in doubt, it is worth flushing the cooling system and filling it with one appropriate type of fluid.
