What components does a hose crimper consist of?

What does a hose crimper consist of? A complete hydraulic hose crimping press consists of the following elements:

crimper head (a large metal casting made of a single piece of steel)
hydraulic seals in the head
master dies in the head into which we mount crimping dies
electric motor (3.75kW motor or higher depending on the model)
micrometer (the component used to set the crimping diameter)
oil tank (HV46 oil, 35-40l filled)
hydraulic oil level indicator (on the side of the tank)
hydraulic pump with filter
foot pedal to control the crimper (press and the crimper crimps)
crimper base (the base on which the crimper is mounted)
set of crimping dies (different number of sets depending on the model)

How does a hydraulic hose crimper work?

Simple explanation of how crimpers work. A hose crimping machine (also known as a hydraulic hose crimper or hose swaging machine) is a tool used for permanently crimping hydraulic hose fittings, also called hose ferrules. It operates on the principle of power hydraulics and uses an appropriate hydraulic system and crimping dies (also called stones or molds) to create a strong and tight connection between the fitting and the hose. Here is a general description of how a hose crimper works: 1. Hose preparation: First, prepare the hydraulic hose for crimping. The hose is appropriately cut and skived to ensure a proper fit of the connector ( hose crimping fittings ). 2. Next, select the appropriate crimping die size that best fits the given hose size - dies are selected according to the hose crimping table. 3. Placing the hose: The hydraulic hose is placed in the crimper head between the crimping dies. The hose fitting should be inside the dies. 4. Crimping the hose: After placing the hose in the dies, the crimper is started. The machine activates the hydraulic system, which provides the force needed for crimping the hose. The crimper piston moves, compressing the dies onto the ferrule, which permanently joins the hose to the fitting. Under hydraulic force, the die presses against the fitting, and simultaneously, the metal crimp ferrules are permanently compressed around the hose. This process creates a permanent connection between the hose and the fitting that is strong and leak-proof. 5. Leak check: After crimping the hose, a test should be performed to check the connection tightness. This may include checking for leaks under pressure or applying a pressure test. Hose crimpers can be manual, pneumatic or hydraulic (electric crimpers), and their complexity and features may vary depending on the model and manufacturer. It is important to use the correct tool and have knowledge of proper hydraulic hose crimping to ensure safety and connection durability.

Which crimper to choose? Crimper selection guide

Crimping diameter

The first basic criterion for choosing the optimal crimper for your company is the crimping diameter. We must answer the question: what maximum diameters will we crimp? (what are the largest hoses we want to crimp) Hydraulic hoses come in the following diameters (hose internal diameters): DN06, 08, 10, 13, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50. If the largest hoses we intend to crimp end at DN25, we can consider purchasing a manual crimper (a manual crimper is ideal for servicing KARCHER pressure washer lines where diameters DN06, 08, 10, 13 occur)

Who is the crimper for? Who will we provide services to?

The second question is directly related to the first criterion. Basically, in agriculture, 80% of hoses are up to DN32mm (otherwise 1 1/4″ inches). If we focus on crimping hoses for the construction industry (construction machines, etc.), we must realize that here, unlike in agriculture, there are more larger hoses; therefore, we recommend purchasing a larger crimper that crimps hoses up to 2″ (DN50)

How many hoses will we crimp?

The third criterion is the approximate number of lines we intend to crimp. If we intend to crimp lines up to DN 25 or DN 32 for our own needs or the quantity will be very small, we recommend considering a manual crimper. If the quantity of lines will be medium or large, we recommend buying an electric-powered crimper.

A few words about crimping machines

Crimping presses are designed for crimping (swaging) hydraulic hoses. Hose crimping consists of permanently mounting a fitting onto a hose (crimping). Crimpers are equipped with interchangeable sets of dies. Die changes are made depending on the diameter of the hose being crimped. Basic parameters are: crimping force, crimping diameter, number of dies, maximum die opening. Crimpers can be powered by muscle power (manual), compressed air power (pneumatic) or electricity (electric presses). Electric crimpers designed for stationary work in workshops are most common. Crimpers can be equipped with various control systems (depending on needs): manual micrometer control, digital control (buttons), computer control (touch panel).
