The primary task of grease nipples is to dispense grease in various mechanical devices, e.g., for hydraulic cylinders. We have grease fittings in various versions (straight, 45-degree angle, 90-degree angle) and with different threads. We carry both metric threads as well as BSP inch threads. Our offer also includes 4-jaw couplers for grease nipples and tips and connectors designed for central lubrication systems.
Most commonly encountered types of grease fittings:
- straight grease nipples
- 45-degree angle grease fitting
- 90-degree angle grease nipples
- ball grease nipples
- cap-type grease nipples
- flat grease nipple
Ball grease nipples
Ball grease nipples are small components used to introduce grease into moving machine parts and devices. Their design is based on a special ball valve that opens under grease pressure and closes when lubrication is finished. Thanks to this, the grease is stored tightly, and contaminants do not enter the device. They are ideal for places where protection against dirt and dust is required. This type of grease nipple is referred to as: conical grease nipple due to the cone in the upper part.
Cap-type grease nipples
Cap-type grease nipples are designed with additional protection in the form of a cap that protects the grease nipple opening from dirt. They are commonly used in conditions where devices are exposed to harsh weather conditions such as dust, dirt, water, or other external factors. They facilitate access to lubrication points while protecting mechanisms from unwanted contaminants.
Flat grease nipple
Flat grease nipples stand out for their low profile, making them an ideal solution in places with limited space. They are used in lubrication points where classic grease nipples might not fit. They feature a simple design that allows easy connection of a grease gun and are often used in precision mechanisms where installation space is limited.
Angled grease nipples
The PN-76/M-86003 standard specifies requirements for pressure ball grease nipples with a conical head, angled, used for pressure lubrication with liquid or solid grease. These grease nipples allow for efficient delivery of grease to moving machine parts, ensuring their proper lubrication and extending their service life. Depending on needs, angled grease nipples can be made at different angles, most commonly 45° or 90°, which allows for their installation in hard-to-reach places. Each of these types of grease nipples has its own unique advantages, tailored to specific operating conditions and lubrication requirements.
Long grease fitting
A long grease fitting is a variation of a grease nipple used where access to the lubrication point is difficult or impossible using standard, short grease fittings. The elongated form allows for convenient connection of the grease gun tip even in deep sockets, covers, or tight structural spaces, without the need to dismantle machine components. The long grease fitting is used in central lubrication systems, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, and industrial equipment, where regular and precise grease supply directly affects the durability of pins, bearings, and joints. Thanks to solid workmanship and a tight check valve, it ensures safe pumping of grease under pressure and reduces the risk of contamination and lubricant loss.
How does a grease fitting work?
A grease fitting, also known as a grease nipple, is a small device used to supply grease to moving machine parts or mechanisms for their lubrication. Its operation is based on providing a simple and controlled way of grease application without the need to dismantle the mechanisms. Here is how a grease fitting works: Construction: A grease fitting consists of a metal body with an inlet opening and a closing ball. The ball acts as a one-way valve that prevents grease from leaking out while allowing grease to be pushed inside. Lubrication process: Lubrication is performed using a manual or pneumatic grease gun equipped with a tip compatible with the grease fitting. When the grease gun tip is applied to the fitting and activated, grease under pressure is forced through the fitting. The ball in the fitting deflects under the influence of grease pressure, allowing it to flow into the mechanism. Application: Grease passes to bearings, joints, or other moving elements, creating a lubricating layer that reduces friction and part wear. After lubrication is complete, the ball returns to its place, blocking the outlet and preventing grease leaks. Advantages: Thanks to grease fittings, the lubrication process is fast and convenient. It does not require disassembling the mechanism or direct access to the lubricated parts. Regular lubrication through the grease fitting ensures a longer machine life, improves its efficiency, and prevents breakdowns. Grease fittings are widely used in industry, agriculture, and motor vehicles, particularly in places where there is a need for regular lubrication of moving parts such as bearings, hinges, or joints.
Are there grease nipples of different sizes?
Yes, grease nipples (fittings) are available in various sizes and variants. In the Hydron store, you can find grease nipples with metric and inch threads, adapted to different types of machines and devices. Grease fitting sizes are usually determined by their thread, length, and shape, such as straight, angled, or swivel, which facilitate access in hard-to-reach places.
What thread do grease fittings have?
Choosing the right thread depends on the specifications of the device where the grease fitting will be used. Thread details can be checked on the product page. Grease fittings available in the Hydron store come in various thread variants, such as:
- Metric threads (e.g., M6x1, M8x1, M10x1),
- Inch threads (e.g., 1/8", 1/4", 3/8"),
- Tapered threads (e.g., BSPT or NPT).
What grease for grease fittings?
For grease nipples, the most commonly used are universal lithium greases, which are characterized by high adhesion and resistance to high temperatures and loads. In the case of specific applications, such as devices operating in extreme conditions, it is worth choosing synthetic greases or greases adapted to specific conditions, e.g., water-resistant or high-pressure resistant. Choosing the right grease can be consulted with Hydron experts.
What is the best grease gun to buy?
The best choice of grease gun depends on the user's needs and the type of work to be performed. Hydron's offer includes: Manual grease guns – ideal for occasional use or in small workshops. Pneumatic grease guns – designed for intensive use in industrial workshops. Battery-powered grease guns – provide mobility and convenience for field work. It is worth paying attention to the capacity of the grease gun and its compatibility with the used types of grease fittings.
What wrench for grease fittings?
For the installation and removal of grease fittings, it is best to use socket or box wrenches of appropriate dimensions, usually corresponding to the thread size of the grease fitting. For example, for M6 or M8 grease fittings, wrenches with a width of 8-10 mm can be used. In the case of grease fittings with inch threads, choose wrenches compliant with the thread size (e.g., 1/8" or 1/4").
How to clear a clogged grease fitting?
A clogged grease fitting can be cleared using the following methods: Using a grease gun with higher pressure: Some pneumatic grease guns are able to push through accumulated dirt thanks to high pressure. Chemical cleaning: It is worth soaking the grease fitting in a cleaning agent (e.g., industrial degreaser) and leaving it for a few hours. Clearing wire: Using a thin wire to remove the internal blockage. Replacing the grease fitting: If clearing does not bring results, the grease fitting should be replaced with a new one. Each method requires caution not to damage the thread or the device. In the Hydron store, both new grease nipples and accessories for their installation and servicing are available.

SAE J-534 / DIN 71412A / PN 86002
is a set of standards describing grease nipples (grease fittings) – elements installed in machines and devices for supplying lubricant (grease or oil) using a manual or pneumatic grease gun.
What are grease nipples according to these standards
These standards define the tip shape, connection dimensions, cone angle, thread type and compatibility with standard grease gun tips. Thanks to this, grease nipples made according to SAE/DIN/PN are fully interchangeable and work seamlessly with commonly used grease guns.
Scope and significance of individual standards
- SAE J-534 is an American standard describing, among others, grease fitting tip types (straight, angle), cone dimensions, and tolerances. It is very widespread in imported machines and in the automotive industry.
- DIN 71412A is the European (German) equivalent, most commonly found in version A – straight grease nipple with a 60° cone. The standard specifies external dimensions and material requirements.
- PN 86002 is a Polish standard, dimensionally compliant with DIN 71412, ensuring installation compatibility in older and current machine designs used in the country.
Threads and execution
Grease nipples compliant with these standards come with metric threads (e.g., M6, M8, M10) and inch (e.g., 1/8" BSP). They are most commonly produced from free-cutting steel with a protective coating (zinc plating), which ensures corrosion resistance and durability in difficult working conditions.
Application in practice
The SAE J-534 / DIN 71412A / PN 86002 standards are commonly used in:
- industrial and agricultural machinery,
- central lubrication systems,
- trucks and construction vehicles,
- bearings, pins, joints
- and elements exposed to intense friction.
Why compliance with the standard matters
The use of grease nipples manufactured in accordance with the standard guarantees a tight connection with the grease gun, no loss of lubricant, operational safety, and a long service life of the lubricated elements. This is particularly important in power hydraulics and maintenance, where regular and effective lubrication directly affects machine reliability.
