1 NPT thread – characteristics, identification, and application
What is a 1 NPT thread?
1 NPT (National Pipe Taper) thread is an American tapered pipe thread used in industrial installations for leak-tight connections on the threads. The seal is formed on the side surfaces of the thread due to the taper and proper assembly using PTFE tape or sealing paste.
Characteristics of 1 NPT thread
1 NPT thread has a 60° profile, is tapered (taper 1:16 ~ 3/4" per foot), and was designed to achieve tightness without additional face seals. The "1" nominal refers to the approximate pipe bore diameter, not the outer diameter of the thread.
Identification and dimensions in practice
The simplest way to identify 1 NPT is to measure the outer diameter and count the threads per inch. For 1 NPT, the outer diameter of the cylindrical part of the male thread element is approx. 32.9–33.4 mm, and the number of threads is 11.5 TPI. These data allow distinguishing 1 NPT from similar BSP or UNF sizes.
Application of 1 NPT thread
1 NPT thread is found in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, oil, fuel, water installations, and process equipment. Due to its tapered nature, it works great in connections requiring tightness with limited installation space.
Internal and external threads – elements available at Hydron
For internal 1 NPT threads, the following are typically used: couplings (sleeves), AA connectors (nut–nut), AA female tees, reducer bushings, female elbows, nuts, and locknuts. External thread elements include nipples, hose tails, adapters, and reducers for transitions to other standards (BSP, UNF, metric).
Smaller and larger thread – how to choose the size?
If a 1 NPT connection is too massive or does not fit the housing, a smaller thread is usually chosen, e.g., 3/4 NPT (approx. 26.9–27.4 mm, 14 TPI) or 1/2 NPT (approx. 20.6–21.0 mm, 14 TPI). When greater capacity is needed, the natural choice is a larger thread, e.g., 1 1/4 NPT (approx. 41.4–42.0 mm, 11.5 TPI) or 1 1/2 NPT (approx. 47.3–47.9 mm, 11.5 TPI). The choice should depend on the required flow, allowable pressure losses, and the installation space.
Selection and compatibility
When connecting NPT elements, pay attention to:
-
Taper – both elements must be NPT/NPTF, not BSPP/BSPT nor UNF.
-
Sealing – PTFE tape or paste for tapered threads; flat face seals are not used.
-
Tightening torque – tighten gradually, controlling the orientation of the element (positioning of elbows). Excessive tightening can lead to socket cracking or loss of tightness.
