3/8 NPT thread characteristics, identification, and application

What is a 3/8 NPT thread?

The 3/8 NPT (National Pipe Thread) is a tapered pipe thread used primarily in hydraulic and pneumatic installations. The "3/8" designation refers to the nominal internal diameter of the pipe, while "NPT" defines the thread type according to the American standard ANSI B1.20.1. Thanks to its tapered shape, a leak-tight connection is achieved during assembly without the need for additional seals.

Characteristics and dimensions of the 3/8 NPT thread

The 3/8 NPT thread has 18 threads per inch (TPI) and a 60° profile angle. The external diameter of the thread ranges from 16.3–16.6 mm, which corresponds to the data in the Hydron thread identification table. The tapered profile ensures that the connection becomes increasingly tight as it is screwed in, providing high resistance to leaks. NPT threads are available in both external (male) and internal (female) versions – most commonly in fittings, couplings, tees, and pipe elbows.

Application of the 3/8 NPT thread

The 3/8 NPT thread is widely used in:

  • power hydraulics and pneumatic systems,

  • supply and measurement systems,

  • industrial systems where high leak-tightness is required,

  • hose connections, reductions, and pressure adapters.

Due to its design, NPT threads are excellent for high-pressure applications and are compatible with a wide range of components offered by Hydron.

Why choose products with a 3/8 NPT thread at the Hydron store?

Hydron offers a wide selection of fittings, ends, and adapters with a 3/8 NPT thread, made of high-quality steel and brass. All products meet rigorous quality standards and are adapted to work in difficult industrial conditions. Thanks to the experience of the Hydron team and the extensive range of components, choosing the right thread for your hydraulic system is fast and trouble-free.

3-8 thread

3/8" NPT thread American tapered thread in power hydraulics and pneumatics

3/8" NPT thread (short for National Pipe Taper, 3/8"-18 NPT / NPTF threads) is a standardized tapered pipe thread according to the American ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 standard, commonly used in power hydraulic systems, pneumatics, gas installations, and measuring instruments. It is characterized by a tapered profile with a 1:16 taper and a 60° thread angle. The sealing of the NPT connection occurs directly on the thread turns through mechanical flattening of the male and female taper edges during tightening. For the 3/8" NPT size, the pitch is 18 threads per inch (18 TPI), the external diameter of the male thread measured with a caliper ranges from 16.3 mm to 16.6 mm, while the internal diameter of the female thread is from 14.9 mm to 15.4 mm. The 3/8" NPT thread is a connection standard used, among others, in high-pressure hydraulic equipment from Enerpac and Larzep (700 bar), measuring pressure gauges, shut-off valves, and in connectors for American and Asian-made machines.

Application and technical characteristics of the 3/8" NPT thread

Components with 3/8" NPT and NPTF threads are installed in high-pressure systems where absolute connection tightness is required without the use of rubber seals or copper flat washers. Due to the self-sealing taper profile, this thread is excellent for applications exposed to high pressures and variable loads.

  • Tapered sealing profile (1:16 taper): Allows for metal-to-metal tightness on the thread turns (in the case of NPTF) or with the aid of PTFE tape / anaerobic sealant adhesive.
  • 60° thread profile angle: A characteristic standard for American NPT/NPTF inch threads, distinguishing it from British BSPT tapered threads (where the profile angle is 55°).
  • Precise caliper measurements: The external male thread has a diameter of 16.3–16.6 mm, and the internal female thread has 14.9–15.4 mm with a pitch of 18 threads per inch.
  • Common standard in 700 bar hydraulics: Used as a factory connection port in pumps, cylinders, valves, and quick couplings of brands such as Enerpac, Larzep, and DNP.
  • Wide selection of adapters and fittings: This category includes straight fittings, 90° elbows, tees, reductions, and hose ends (AGN / C71) with a 3/8" NPT thread.

Why choose components with a 3/8" NPT thread in the HYDRON store?

The HYDRON store offers a full range of fasteners, hose ends, and adapters with a 3/8" NPT thread made of galvanized free-cutting steel and AISI 316L stainless steel. Correct thread identification is crucial in power hydraulics – confusing a 3/8" NPT tapered thread with a British 3/8" BSPT thread (where the pitch is 19 threads per inch) leads to thread seizure and loss of tightness. When assembling NPT connections, it is recommended to use appropriate Teflon tapes or liquid sealants, which prevents micro-leaks under high pressure. For comprehensive construction and service of hydraulic and pneumatic installations, we recommend choosing other compatible products from our offer, such as crimped hydraulic hoses and lines, professional 700 bar hydraulic valves, flexible NPT hydraulic quick couplings and precision pressure gauges.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to measure a 3/8" NPT thread with a caliper?

When applying a caliper to the external male thread, you should obtain a dimension in the range of 16.3–16.6 mm. In the case of an internal (female) thread, the hole diameter is between 14.9 mm and 15.4 mm, and a thread gauge will show 18 threads per inch.

What is the difference between a 3/8" NPT thread and a 3/8" BSPT thread?

Although both threads are tapered, the NPT thread has a 60° profile angle and a pitch of 18 threads per inch. The British BSPT thread has a 55° profile angle and a pitch of 19 threads per inch. Because of these differences, they are not interchangeable and must not be screwed together.

What is the difference between NPT and NPTF threads?

The NPTF (Dryseal) thread is an improved variant of the NPT thread, where the crests and roots of the threads have been modified so that when screwed together, they provide a leak-free pure mechanical seal (dry-seal) without the need for sealing tapes.

Is Teflon tape required for 3/8" NPT thread assembly?

For standard NPT fittings, it is recommended to use PTFE Teflon tape or liquid hydraulic thread sealant, which guarantees full system tightness at high operating pressures.
