1/2 NPT thread characteristics, identification, and application
1/2 NPT (National Pipe Taper) thread is a tapered pipe thread commonly used in hydraulic, pneumatic, and pressure systems. The "NPT" designation indicates an American National Standard Pipe Taper thread, with an angle of 60°, and the outside diameter gradually decreases towards the end, enabling a tight seal without the need for additional flat gaskets. For the 1/2 NPT size, the number of threads is 14 per inch, and the outside diameter is approximately 20.9 mm.
1 2 tapered thread dimensions

1/2 NPT thread characteristics
Thread type: tapered
Standard: ANSI/ASME B1.20.1
Thread angle: 60°
Number of threads: 14 threads/inch
Outside diameter: approx. 20.9 mm
Sealing: through tapered self-clamping, optionally using PTFE tape or sealing paste
Identification of 1/2 NPT thread
The thread can be recognized by its slightly tapered shape (decreasing diameter towards the end) and a larger thread angle compared to BSP threads. Measuring the outside diameter in the range of 20.5–20.9 mm and the number of threads (14 per inch) allows for the clear identification of the thread as 1/2 NPT.
Application of 1/2 NPT thread
1/2 NPT thread is widely used in:
power and industrial hydraulics,
pneumatic systems,
liquid and gas transport systems,
connections for pressure gauges, sensors, and valves,
fuel, cooling, and oil systems.
