1/4 NPT thread what it is and where it is used
1/4 NPT thread is a tapered pipe thread originating from the American National Pipe Thread standard. It is widely used in power hydraulics, pneumatics, as well as oil and measurement installations, particularly in machinery and equipment of American or Asian origin. The 1/4 NPT thread is a self-sealing thread, meaning that the tightness of the connection is achieved on the thread turns, rather than on the face surface. For this reason, it is very popular in pressure gauges, valves, quick couplers and pressure adapters.
1/4 NPT thread dimensions, construction
The 1/4 NPT thread has 18 turns per inch (18 TPI) and a nominal outer diameter of approximately 13.6 mm, as confirmed by the HYDRON thread identification table. The tapered shape of the thread allows for self-sealing of the connection using sealing pastes, Teflon, or PTFE tapes. The thread angle is 60°, and the pitch is adapted to ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 standards. As a result, NPT threads ensure high tightness even in high-pressure systems.

Recognizing 1/4 NPT thread
When identifying 1/4 NPT thread, it is worth paying attention to:
-
characteristic tapered shape (not cylindrical like in BSPP),
-
outer diameter within the range of 12.9–13.1 mm,
-
number of turns 18 TPI,
-
presence of a slight thread taper at the tip. NPT threads can be distinguished from British BSP by the taper angle and the sealing method – NPT seals on the thread, while BSPT/BSPP requires a flat or conical gasket.
How does 1/4 NPT thread differ from European threads
1/4 NPT thread differs significantly from BSP threads and metric threads. The fundamental difference is the taper, which is 1:16, allowing the thread to wedge during screwing. Additionally, NPT thread has a 60° flank angle, while BSP threads have a 55° angle. These differences mean that the 1/4 NPT thread is not compatible with the 1/4 BSP thread, despite having a very similar outer diameter. Attempting to join them leads to leaks or permanent damage to the components.
Application of 1/4 NPT thread
1/4 NPT thread is commonly used in:
-
hydraulic and pneumatic systems,
-
lubrication and oil systems,
-
connections of pressure gauges, sensors, and valves,
-
industrial, laboratory, and service equipment.
Threads of this type are also found in components such as connectors, nipples, couplings, elbows, tees, and plugs, available in a wide assortment in the Hydron store.
1/4 NPT thread how to seal
1/4 NPT thread always requires additional sealing on the turns. In practice, the following are used:
O-rings or washers are not used here, as tightness is achieved by properly tightening the tapered thread.
Why choose NPT threads in the Hydron store?
Hydron offers components with NPT threads made of high-quality carbon steel, stainless steel, and brass, meeting the requirements of American standards. Thanks to nearly 20 years of experience in the power hydraulics industry, Hydron specialists help select the right type of connector for a specific application, ensuring durability and safety of connections even at pressures up to 700 bar.
