3/4 BSP thread, characteristics, dimensions, and application
What is a 3/4 BSP thread?
3/4 BSP thread is a popular, inch-based pipe thread used in power hydraulics and pneumatics installations. It comes in two variants: straight BSPP (G) – sealed on a flat surface or with a bonded seal washer, and tapered BSPT (R) – sealed on the thread.
Dimensions and parameters
-
Outer diameter (nominal) of a component with a 3/4 BSP male thread: approx. 26.1–26.4 mm. The pitch is 14 threads per inch (14 TPI). For the socket (female thread), the corresponding diameter is approx. 24.1–24.5 mm. These data facilitate identification during caliper measurement.
-
For comparison, the 'smaller thread' 1/2 BSP is approx. 20.5–20.9 mm (14 TPI), and the 'larger thread' 1 BSP is approx. 33.0–33.2 mm (11 TPI). This helps to quickly distinguish 3/4” from neighboring sizes in the field.
Sealing variants
-
BSPP (G): face seal on a flat surface or with a washer (bonded seal/O-ring).
-
BSPT (R): sealing on a tapered thread profile – it is important to use the correct sealant/tape according to the installation standard.
Application
3/4 BSP thread is standard in:
-
hydraulic hoses and fittings for medium flows (industry, agriculture, construction),
-
pneumatic systems and water/technical media installations in machinery and equipment,
-
connections for pressure gauges, filters, directional control valves, quick couplers, and valves with inch connections.
How to identify 3/4 BSP in practice
-
Measure the outer diameter of the nipple/nut – approx. 26.1–26.4 mm suggests 3/4”.
-
Count the threads over a 1” section: it should be 14 TPI (for 3/4 BSPP/BSPT).
-
Check the sealing type: flat surface (BSPP) vs. taper (BSPT).
Typical components with 3/4 BSP thread
-
Male threads: nipples, hose tails, male-to-male tees/elbows, reducers (e.g., 3/4” ↔ 1/2” or 1”).
-
Female threads: couplings (sleeves), AA connectors (nut–nut), AA female tees, differential bushings, female elbows, nuts, locknuts.
Compatibility and reductions (smaller / larger thread)
-
To step down to a 'smaller thread', 3/4”→1/2” BSP reducers are often used (easier adaptation to fittings with smaller cross-sections). The 1/2” diameter reference data helps verify selection.
-
To transition to a 'larger thread', 3/4”→1” BSP reducers are used – a larger connection diameter allows for higher flow; 1” dimensions confirm identification accuracy.
Installation tips
-
Select the correct variant (BSPP/BSPT) for the sealing method in the device.
-
Use appropriate washers/gaskets for BSPP or sealant for BSPT.
-
Avoid mixing systems (e.g., NPT with BSP) – different angles/pitches and standards may cause leaks.
If you need specific connectors, reducers, or hose tails with a 3/4 BSP thread – provide the application and medium, and I will select the correct components along with the sealing.
