Types of stainless steel used in pipes
1. Austenitic stainless steel (e.g., 1.4404 / TP316L)
The most commonly used stainless steel grade for hydraulic pipes is 1.4404 (TP316L). It is an austenitic steel characterized by high corrosion resistance and excellent weldability. The properties of stainless steel pipes 1.4404 (TP316L) include : ✔ Corrosion resistance: Thanks to the presence of chromium (16-18%), nickel (10-14%) and molybdenum (2-3%), 1.4404 steel is resistant to atmospheric conditions, aggressive chemicals and intergranular corrosion. ✔ Low carbon content (L - Low Carbon): The reduced amount of carbon (max. 0,03%) minimizes the risk of carbide precipitation, which could weaken the corrosion resistance of welds. ✔ High temperature resistance: 1.4404 steel is resistant to temperatures up to approx. 870°C, making it an ideal material for demanding industrial conditions. ✔ Excellent machinability: It can be easily cut, bent and formed, which makes it easier to adapt the pipes to specific systems.
2. Ferritic stainless steel (e.g., 1.4512, AISI 409)
It is a more economical version of stainless steel, but has lower corrosion resistance than austenitic steel. It contains less nickel, which lowers production costs, but may have poorer weldability and flexibility. ✔ Lower price compared to 316L ✔ High temperature resistance, but lower than in austenitic steels ✔ Used in less demanding applications, e.g., in exhaust systems
3. Duplex stainless steel (e.g., 1.4462)
It is more resistant to corrosion and mechanical damage than austenitic steel, but harder to process and more expensive. Used where exceptional resistance to aggressive environments is required (e.g., marine installations, chemical industry). ✔ Exceptional mechanical strength – up to 2 times greater than austenitic steel ✔ Very high resistance to pitting and stress corrosion ✔ Used mainly in extreme applications.
Applications of stainless steel pipes:
If corrosion resistance, durability and safety are key, the choice should be 316L (1.4404) stainless steel. For applications where costs are a priority and additional anti-corrosion protection is possible, carbon steel can be considered. In hydraulic and industrial systems, stainless steel is the best choice, especially in environments exposed to moisture, chemicals and high temperatures. Precision seamless stainless steel pipes are used in the following industries : ✔️ Food industry – thanks to its stainless properties, the pipes are perfectly suited for liquid and gas transport systems under conditions that require hygiene and resistance to external factors. ✔️ Chemical and petrochemical industry – resistance to chemical substances makes them reliable in transfer installations for aggressive liquids or technical gases. ✔️ Marine industry – ideal in environments with high humidity and exposed to salt water. ✔️ Power hydraulics – used in hydraulic systems where durability and reliability are important under high-pressure operating conditions.

Stainless steel tubes
Stainless steel tubes are precision seamless pipes designed for the construction and modernization of power hydraulic installations, where high corrosion resistance, durability and stability of operating parameters count. Made of stainless steel with an appropriate chemical composition, they ensure a long service life even in environments exposed to moisture, aggressive media or variable temperatures. Thanks to their seamless construction, stainless steel pipes maintain a uniform material structure over their entire length, which translates into safety and repeatability of the system's operation.
What distinguishes seamless stainless steel hydraulic pipes
Seamless stainless steel hydraulic pipes are characterized by high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, which is particularly important in installations operating outdoors or in contact with liquids of increased chemical aggressiveness. The smooth internal surface limits pressure losses and promotes the proper flow of the medium, while precise dimensional tolerances facilitate the assembly of hydraulic fittings. Such tubes are adapted to work under high pressure and meet the requirements set for industrial installations.
Application of stainless steel tubes in power hydraulics
Stainless steel tubes find application in hydraulic systems of industrial machinery, technological lines, chemical installations, food plants and in systems operating in environments with elevated hygienic requirements. They are used where standard steel pipes could be subject to accelerated wear or corrosion. They also prove themselves in mobile hydraulics, the marine industry and in installations exposed to atmospheric factors.
Why seamless stainless steel pipes are used
Seamless stainless steel pipes for power hydraulics ensure high reliability and operational safety. The lack of a weld eliminates a potential point of structural weakness, which is important at high operating pressures. Stainless steel retains its mechanical properties for a long time, which reduces the risk of leaks and service downtime. Additionally, these pipes are resistant to material aging and easy to keep clean.

expand text Stainless steel pipe sizes
What are stainless steel pipes and how are their sizes designated?
Stainless steel pipes are installation and structural elements made of corrosion-resistant steels. Their sizes are given in the metric or imperial system, depending on the standard and application. In practice, three parameters are key: outer diameter (OD), wall thickness (WT) and commercial section length.
Metric system (mm)
In the metric system, the size is written as outer diameter × wall thickness, e.g. Ø 12 × 1 mm, Ø 25 × 2 mm, Ø 60,3 × 3 mm. This notation ensures precise matching to fittings and valves in the European standard, and also facilitates machining and installation design.
Imperial system (DN / NPS and Schedule)
In the imperial system, nominal designations DN or NPS are used, which are not directly equal to the diameter in millimeters. For example, DN15 usually corresponds to a pipe with an outer diameter of about 21,3 mm, and DN25 to about 33,7 mm. Additionally, the wall thickness is described by the Schedule class (e.g., Sch 5S, 10S, 40S), which affects the internal diameter and permissible operating pressure.
Typical dimension ranges
Outer diameters in practice range from about 6 mm to 508 mm (up to 20"). Wall thicknesses start from 0,5 mm in thin-walled decorative pipes and reach up to over a dozen millimeters in pipes for industrial and pressure applications. Standard commercial lengths are most often 6 m, however, shorter and longer sections cut to size are also available.
Dimensional and quality standards
The most commonly encountered standards are EN 10216-5 and EN 10217-7 for pressure applications, EN 10312 for thin-walled sanitary installations, as well as ASTM A312, A269 and A213 in the American standard. The choice of standard affects dimensional tolerances, surface roughness and requirements regarding quality testing.
Example metric sizes
Popular dimensions include, among others: Ø 6 × 1 mm, Ø 8 × 1 mm, Ø 10 × 1 mm, Ø 12 × 1 mm, Ø 14 × 1,5 mm, Ø 16 × 1,5 mm, Ø 18 × 1,5 mm, Ø 20 × 2 mm, Ø 25 × 2 mm, Ø 30 × 2 mm, Ø 38 × 2 mm, Ø 42,4 × 2 mm, Ø 48,3 × 2 mm, Ø 60,3 × 2–3 mm, Ø 76,1 × 2–3 mm, Ø 88,9 × 2–3 mm, Ø 114,3 × 3 mm.
Example imperial equivalents
DN15 ≈ ½" (OD ≈ 21,3 mm), DN20 ≈ ¾" (OD ≈ 26,9 mm), DN25 ≈ 1" (OD ≈ 33,7 mm), DN32 ≈ 1¼" (OD ≈ 42,4 mm), DN40 ≈ 1½" (OD ≈ 48,3 mm), DN50 ≈ 2" (OD ≈ 60,3 mm), DN65 ≈ 2½" (OD ≈ 76,1 mm), DN80 ≈ 3" (OD ≈ 88,9 mm), DN100 ≈ 4" (OD ≈ 114,3 mm). The actual inner diameter depends on the adopted Schedule class.
Tips for size selection
When selecting the pipe size, it is necessary to consider the required flow of the medium, permissible pressure drops, working pressure, working temperature and compatibility with the applied valves and fittings. In industrial installations, it is also important to select the appropriate Schedule class or wall thickness to ensure an adequate safety margin.
