Enerpac HCL series hydraulic cylinders – high tonnage cylinders with lock nut (700 bar)

Enerpac HCL series hydraulic cylinders (single-acting cylinders with lock nut and gravity return, Enerpac High Tonnage Lock Nut Cylinders) are powerful, specialized hydraulic equipment designed for lifting and long-term, safe holding of large-scale objects. The HCL series offers a wide capacity range from 50 to as much as 1000 metric tons (generating forces from 550 kN to 10,644 kN / 10.6 MN) at a maximum operating pressure of 700 bar (70 MPa). A key advantage of the HCL series cylinders is the threaded plunger equipped with a mechanical lock nut, which, when lowered onto the body, mechanically locks the load in the desired position. This allows for safe work under a raised load without the need to maintain hydraulic pressure and without the risk of the plunger dropping. Manufactured using advanced Summit technology, Enerpac HCL cylinders are characterized by resistance to side loads up to 10%, a hardened anti-corrosion coating, and an overflow port that limits the plunger stroke, making them indispensable equipment for the construction of bridges, viaducts, in the shipbuilding and pressure industries, and geotechnics.

Application and technical characteristics of Enerpac HCL series cylinders

High-pressure Enerpac HCL series cylinders were created for lifting tasks where the priority is the highest level of safety and the possibility of long-term positioning of multi-ton structures. They are commonly used for leveling engineering objects, foundation work, underpinning structures, and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery.

  • Mechanical load lock (Lock Nut): The threaded safety ring, when tightened against the body face, takes over the entire mechanical load, allowing the hydraulic pump to be disconnected and safe work under the load.
  • Extreme performance and capacity up to 1000 tons: Devices manufactured according to ASME B30.1 guidelines generate forces from 550 kN to 10,644 kN at 700 bar pressure.
  • Overflow port protecting the plunger: The integrated overflow port acts as a physical stroke limiter, preventing accidental plunger ejection from the housing.
  • Side load resistance up to 10%: Replaceable composite bearings and hardened seats ensure stable operation with uneven force distribution up to 90% of the working stroke.
  • Low thread friction coefficient: Special surface treatment of the plunger thread facilitates smooth and easy rotation of the safety ring under load.

Why choose Enerpac HCL series cylinders at the HYDRON store?

HYDRON store, as an authorized distributor of Enerpac brand solutions, guarantees access to 100% original, brand new HCL series cylinders meeting the rigorous criteria of the ASME B30.1 standard and the CE Machinery Directive. Equipment with high-flow CR-400 couplers (3/8" NPTF) and built-in or optional CATS series tilt saddles (allowing inclination up to 5°) protects the device against local point overload. The use of a mechanical HCL nut eliminates the need for additional steel or wooden shims under the raised weight. To build a safe lifting set, we recommend selecting other compatible products from our offer, such as original Enerpac hydraulic tools and cylinders, efficient 700 bar hydraulic pumps, high-pressure hydraulic hoses and reliable 700 bar hydraulic quick couplers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the lock nut used for in Enerpac HCL series cylinders?

The lock nut is used to mechanically lock the raised plunger in a selected position. After tightening it against the cylinder body, the hydraulic pressure in the system can be released, and the load rests safely on the mechanical steel support.

How does the plunger return in HCL cylinders?

HCL series cylinders are single-acting devices with gravity return. After unscrewing the lock nut and opening the valve in the pump, the plunger retracts to its initial position under its own weight or the weight of the lowered load.

How does the HCL series differ from the HCG and HCRL series?

The HCL series has a lock nut and gravity return. The HCG series are single-acting cylinders without a lock nut. The HCRL series combines a mechanical lock nut with double-acting operation (hydraulic advance and retract).

Does holding the load with an HCL nut require maintaining pressure in the pump?

No. After tightening the lock nut, the entire weight is supported by the mechanical structure of the cylinder. The pressure in the hydraulic system can be completely reduced, allowing for the disconnection of the supply hose lines.
