Two-wire braided hoses (2SN) are the most popular hoses used in power hydraulics. 2SN hoses are designed for all types of machines and devices in every industry using power hydraulics. Due to the high working pressure of these types of hoses, they are called high-pressure hoses. The hoses have higher working and burst pressures than single-braid hoses. EN 853 2SN and SAE 100R2AT standard, what does it mean?

The designation EN 853 2SN is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), defining construction, dimensional, and strength requirements for rubber hydraulic hoses reinforced with two steel wire braids. The number 2 in the designation directly refers to the number of reinforcement layers, hence hoses of this type are commonly called two-wire braided or 2SN. The EN 853 standard covers two types: 1SN (one braid, lower pressures) and 2SN (two braids, higher working pressures), and it is the 2SN type that is definitely the most popular in power hydraulics.

Parallelly, there is an American standard SAE J517 100R2AT, developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The letter R stands for "Rubber", the number 2 indicates the type of reinforcement (two steel braids), and the suffix AT comes from "Armored Tube" and specifies that it is a version with a steel braid, not a spiral. In practice, the standards EN 853 2SN and SAE 100R2AT define nearly identical parameters for corresponding nominal diameters and are treated by hose manufacturers and hydraulic system designers as fully interchangeable. A hose having simultaneous compliance with both standards can be used in installations designed according to both European and North American standards – which is important for imported machines and equipment export.

What does the EN 853 2SN / SAE 100R2AT standard define and control?

The standard is not just a manufacturer's declaration; it is a set of precise requirements that the hose must meet to carry the 2SN designation. The standard defines:

Three-layer construction: inner layer made of synthetic rubber resistant to hydraulic oils, double reinforcement of high-tensile steel wire, outer layer made of rubber resistant to abrasion, ozone, and weather conditions. Dimensions and tolerances: for each nominal size (from DN5 to DN51), the standard specifies allowable deviations of internal and external diameter, which guarantees full interchangeability of hoses from different manufacturers with the same fittings. Working and burst pressure: the EN 853 2SN standard requires the burst pressure to be at least four times the working pressure. This is a 4:1 safety factor, which is the industry standard for 2SN class hydraulic hoses. Minimum bending radius: the standard sets the minimum allowable bending radius for each DN size – exceeding it in the installation leads to permanent damage to the reinforcement structure, and consequently to sudden hose leakage. Operating temperature range: the standard specifies both the minimum temperature (durable flexibility in frost) and the maximum continuous operating temperature for hydraulic fluids. Chemical resistance: a hose compliant with EN 853 2SN must work with hydraulic fluids specified in the standard ISO 6743-4 (groups HH, HL, HM, HR, HV), aqueous solutions, and compressed air. The standard explicitly excludes use with fluids based on castor oil and esters. Strength tests: each production batch is subject to pressure tests, resistance tests to repeated bending under pressure, resistance tests to twisting, and tightness and durability tests of connections with fittings. Marking: each hose compliant with the standard must be permanently marked on the outer surface – providing the standard number, type, nominal diameter, and working pressure. The absence of clear marking is a signal that the product may not meet the standard requirements.

Compliance with the standard EN 853 2SN / SAE J517 100R2AT is the basic criterion for hose selection for hydraulic system designers and maintenance services – it guarantees predictable strength, interchangeability of fittings, and the safety of the installation operating under high pressure.

Application of 2SN hoses :

Two-wire braided hydraulic hoses can be used for:

- hydraulic fluids compliant with ISO 6743-4, except for HFD R, HFD S, HFD T (from -40C to +100C),

- aqueous solutions (from -40°C to +70°C),

- water (from 0°C to +70°C),

- compressed air (from 0°C to +80°C).

The hoses are not intended for fluids containing castor oil and esters.
