Hydraulic lock protects against cylinder dropping

A hydraulic lock is designed to maintain pressure in the system in a situation where one of the hydraulic hoses bursts.  Thanks to hydraulic locks, it is possible to keep cylinders in locked positions, which protects them from falling.

Designed for double-acting cylinders. The dual pilot-operated check valve is used to lock the cylinder in both directions. It ensures stabilization of the piston rod position when the directional control valve is not being operated  and high forces act on the cylinder. What is a hydraulic lock ?

A hydraulic lock is a special valve mounted on hydraulic hoses leading to hydraulic cylinders. Its main task is to block the flow of hydraulic oil, to protect working elements against uncontrolled movement that could be caused by a drop in pressure or other disturbances in the system's operation.

How does a hydraulic lock work ?

A hydraulic lock works by blocking the oil flow in one or both directions, depending on the type of lock. When the cylinder makes a movement, hydraulic oil flows freely through the valve. When the movement is stopped, the hydraulic lock automatically blocks the oil flow, preventing the cylinder from retracting. This keeps the working element in a fixed position.

What does a hydraulic lock protect against ?

A hydraulic lock protects the system against uncontrolled movement of cylinders, which could lead to damage to machines, tools, or danger to the operator. It also protects working elements against loss of position as a result of leaks in the hydraulic system or in the event of a power source failure.

How to check a hydraulic lock ?

To check the correct operation of a hydraulic lock, a cylinder movement blocking test should be performed. To do this, the cylinder is started, and then it is checked whether the cylinder remains in the same position after stopping movement without signs of retracting. Regular inspection of the hydraulic lock condition, especially in terms of tightness and valve efficiency, is crucial for the safe operation of the hydraulic system.
