Description
Threaded blanking plug / plastic plug male 5/8" BSP
Plastic threaded blanking plug male 5/8" BSP is a protective cap with an external inch thread, designed for temporary protection of holes and hydraulic connections. The product is made of plastic and helps protect the interior of hoses, manifolds, cylinders, valves, and other components from dust, dirt, metal shavings, and contamination during repairs, transport, storage, and assembly.
The plastic plug male 5/8" BSP allows for temporary closing of an open connection with a compatible internal thread. It is useful when replacing hydraulic hoses, servicing agricultural, construction, and industrial machinery, and preparing hydraulic parts for storage or shipping.
Important: the plastic blanking plug male 5/8" BSP does not withstand pressure loads. It must not be used to close hydraulic or pneumatic systems operating under pressure.
Color information: the plugs come in various colors, which are packed and shipped randomly. The color of the product received may differ from the one shown in the photo.

Application of the 5/8" BSP protective plug in power hydraulics
The plastic threaded plug male 5/8" BSP is used for temporary protection of hydraulic connections during service work, technical inspections, and hose replacement. It can be used in compatible ports of manifolds, cylinders, valves, and other system components.
The blanking plug helps limit the entry of contaminants into the interior of the component when a hose has been disconnected or a part is being prepared for repair. The product serves a protective function and is not intended for sealing the system during operation.
Male thread G 5/8" BSP – dimensions and identification
The 5/8" BSP thread belongs to the family of inch pipe threads. For a cylindrical thread, the G 5/8 designation is used according to ISO 228-1. Its standard external diameter is approximately 22.91 mm, and the number of threads is 14 per inch. This corresponds to a pitch of approximately 1.814 mm.
BSP threads have a 55° profile angle. However, one should distinguish cylindrical BSPP threads, designated by the letter G, from tapered BSPT threads, designated among others by the letter R. The BSP notation itself does not clearly define the thread design, so before installing the plug, its compatibility with the protected connection must be confirmed.
It is worth remembering that the 5/8" designation does not mean an external thread diameter of 15.875 mm. This is the nominal size of the BSP pipe thread, whose actual external diameter is larger. A caliper and an inch thread gauge can be used for identification.
Protecting hydraulic hoses from contamination
During repairs of hydraulic systems, open hoses and connections are exposed to contact with dust, dirt, sand, and metal shavings. The plastic blanking plug male 5/8" BSP allows for temporary closing of a properly fitted hole, helping to limit the access of contaminants to its interior.
Maintaining the cleanliness of components is important for the reliability of power hydraulics. Contaminants entering the hydraulic oil can accelerate the wear of pumps, valves, manifolds, and sealing elements. Using protective plugs during servicing helps to limit this risk.
Male 5/8" BSP blanking plug for transport and storage
The 5/8" BSP plastic plug is useful during the transportation and storage of hydraulic parts. Temporary closing of a threaded hole helps protect its interior from dust and accidental entry of foreign bodies.
The product can be used in power hydraulics workshops, spare parts warehouses, and during the preparation of components for shipping. Before starting the system, the plastic blanking plug must be removed and the final hydraulic connection must be made.
Plastic – construction of the protective blanking plug
The male 5/8" BSP blanking plug is made of plastic. Its primary task is to protect threaded holes from contamination during transport, storage, and service work.
The plastic construction is not intended to withstand pressure loads. During assembly, excessive tightening should be avoided, as it may lead to damage of the thread or deformation of the plug body.
Plastic blanking plug vs. hydraulic pressure plug
The plastic plug male 5/8" BSP is a protective element used for temporary protection of connections. It cannot replace a hydraulic plug intended for closing a system operating under pressure.
If a connection is to remain closed during machine operation, a proper pressure plug with confirmed operating parameters, appropriate thread, and sealing method must be used. Just fitting the thread size does not mean that the plastic plug is suitable for operation in a hydraulic system under pressure.
How to choose a plastic blanking plug male 5/8" BSP?
Before purchasing, ensure that the hole being protected has a compatible internal 5/8" BSP thread. A standard cylindrical G 5/8 thread has an external diameter of approximately 22.91 mm and 14 threads per inch. You should also check whether the connection has a cylindrical or tapered thread.
The product is suitable for temporary protection of connections during transport, storage, and repairs. It cannot be used as a closure for systems operating under pressure.
Installation and removal of the 5/8" BSP plastic plug
Before installation, turn off the device, safely depressurize the system, and clean the threaded hole. Then check the compatibility of the plug thread with the connection being protected.
The blanking plug should be screwed in carefully, without excessive force. If significant resistance appears during installation, stop screwing and re-check the thread fit. Before starting the system, the plastic plug must be removed.
Various colors – random packing
Plastic blanking plugs male 5/8" BSP are available in various colors. Color variants are packed and shipped randomly, so the color of the product received may differ from the one shown in the photo.
Color is not the primary criterion for technical selection. The most important factors are thread compatibility and the protective purpose of the blanking plug.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What thread does the male 5/8" BSP plastic blanking plug have?
The blanking plug has an external inch pipe thread of size 5/8" BSP. A standard cylindrical G 5/8 thread has an external diameter of approximately 22.91 mm and 14 threads per inch. Compatibility of the actual plug thread with the connection must be confirmed before installation.
Does the 5/8" BSP plastic plug withstand hydraulic pressure?
No. The blanking plug does not withstand pressure loads and cannot be used to close an operating hydraulic system.
What is the male 5/8" BSP plastic blanking plug used for?
It is used for temporary protection of hoses, manifolds, cylinders, and other components from contamination during repairs, transport, storage, and assembly.
Does a 5/8" BSP thread have a diameter of 15.875 mm?
No. The 5/8" designation is the nominal pipe thread size. A standard cylindrical G 5/8 thread has an external diameter of approximately 22.91 mm, so the designation should not be converted directly into the diameter measured with a caliper.
Are BSPP and BSPT threads the same?
No. BSPP means a cylindrical thread, while BSPT means a tapered thread. They can have the same number of threads and profile, but they differ in geometry. Confirm the thread type compatibility before using the plug.
Can I choose the color of the blanking plug?
The plugs come in various colors, which are packed and shipped randomly. The color of the product delivered may differ from the one shown in the photo.
Can the plastic blanking plug be reused?
Before reuse, check the condition of the thread and the body. Damaged, cracked, or deformed blanking plugs should be replaced.
