Hydraulic rotary elbow
The term „hydraulic rotary elbow” is sometimes used in reference to several different groups of components mounted in power hydraulic systems. In practice, it may apply to both joints allowing for the rotary motion of the hose and standard elbows, which are incorrectly called rotary due to the way they work in the installation. The components that users may refer to by this term include, among others: angular rotary joints available in this category, elbows with a swivel nut from the AB elbow series, elbow fittings,
Why some components are called rotary
The term „rotary” results from the construction of the joints, which have an internal mechanism allowing for free rotation around the axis. These types of joints are used where the hose must work in motion, change position, perform turns, or be exposed to vibrations. Free rotation limits stress, prevents hose twisting, and significantly extends its lifespan. In practice, such a solution increases the operational safety of the system and reduces the risk of failure. Some users also call a regular hydraulic elbow a rotary elbow because it visually changes the flow direction and is sometimes mounted in a way that allows the hose to be set in the correct position. However, classic elbows, such as AB or standard 90° fittings, do not have a rotary mechanism and after tightening, they remain in one fixed position. The naming is therefore a result of a colloquial way of describing installation components, rather than their actual functionality. If a joint that truly rotates is needed, dedicated rotary joints should be chosen. If, however, the installation only requires a change in the hose direction, standard elbows and elbow fittings will be appropriate. If necessary, Hydron provides assistance in choosing the correct variant for a specific installation. We invite you to visit the website and place orders.
