BB NPT 90° elbows for power hydraulics

BB elbow fittings with American NPT tapered thread (60°).

A connector with two male threads is a popular fitting used for connecting flexible hoses and pipes at a right angle. Coated with an anti-corrosion O-zinc layer in white passivation. Element made from a forging (monoblock).

BB NPT 90° Elbows

BB NPT 90° elbows are hydraulic fittings designed to change the direction of an installation at a right angle. In the available variants, one side has a tapered NPT male thread, and the other a male metric connection of the L series. The category currently includes 3/8" NPT / M18x1.5 12L and 1/2" NPT / M22x1.5 15L connections. The fittings are made of free-cutting steel, protected by zinc plating and designed for operation at pressures up to 315 bar.

Technical parameters of BB NPT elbows

  • Element type: 90° hydraulic elbow
  • Configuration: two male threads
  • Side 1 thread: tapered NPT
  • NPT thread profile: 60°
  • Available NPT sizes: 3/8" and 1/2"
  • Side 2 thread: metric
  • Available variants: M18x1.5 12L and M22x1.5 15L
  • Working pressure: 315 bar
  • Operating temperature: from -20°C to +120°C
  • Material: free-cutting steel
  • Surface protection: zinc plating in white passivation
  • Construction: 90° elbow, monoblock element
  • Intended use: connecting hydraulic installation elements

What are BB NPT 90° elbows used for?

An elbow is used when two installation elements must be connected at a 90° angle. It allows for changing the direction of the hose without making an unnecessary bend and without adding several straight adapters. This is particularly important in places with limited mounting space, near control valves, hydraulic blocks, cylinders, and hoses routed close to the machine structure.

In this group, one side of the elbow works with an NPT connection, while the other allows for connecting an L-series metric element. Thanks to this, the fitting simultaneously serves the function of changing direction and transitioning between two types of connections.

NPT thread - what do you need to check before buying?

NPT is a tapered thread. Its geometry differs from the BSP threads popular in hydraulics, even though both systems occur in inch sizes. Therefore, a 3/8" or 1/2" designation is not sufficient to confirm the compatibility of elements.

Before buying, you should determine whether the port in the machine actually has an NPT thread. It is worth verifying the diameter, thread pitch, and its tapered nature. This avoids a common error consisting in attempting to use a BSP connector in an NPT port or vice-versa.

How to choose an NPT elbow for the metric side?

The other side of the elbow should be matched to the size of the cooperating metric connection. Currently, there are two combinations in the category: 3/8" NPT with M18x1.5 12L and 1/2" NPT with M22x1.5 15L.

The 12L and 15L designations refer to the size of the metric side. When replacing an existing fitting, you should check the entire designation, not just the thread diameter. This allows for matching the element to the mating hose end, nut, or another connector occurring in the installation.

Most common error: NPT instead of BSP

One of the most typical problems is confusing the NPT thread with BSP. Both are inch threads, so during a brief measurement, they may appear similar. However, they differ in geometry and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Attempting to tighten an incompatible thread may initially give the impression of correct assembly. In practice, it can lead to damage to the threads, incorrect seating of the connector, and the formation of leaks after increasing the pressure in the installation.

What happens with incorrect elbow selection?

Thread mismatch can cause oil leaks, pressure drops, and the need to dismantle the installation again. If the fitting was tightened with great force into an incompatible port, not only the elbow itself but also the thread in the control valve, cylinder, or hydraulic block may be damaged.

Another problem can be the use of an element with unsuitable pressure parameters. The elbows available in this category have a declared working pressure of 315 bar, so this parameter should be compared with the maximum pressure occurring in a given section of the system.

When is an elbow better than a straight connector?

A 90° elbow makes sense where a hose or pipe would have to be sharply bent directly after the connection. Changing the direction at the fitting allows for routing the installation in a more organized way and reduces the stresses acting on the hose.

If the direction of the installation does not require changing, a simpler solution could be straight connectors. It is not worth using an additional elbow unnecessarily, as each additional element increases the number of connections in the system.

Practical application of BB NPT elbows

An example would be a machine modernization where the hydraulic block is equipped with an NPT port and the rest of the installation uses metric connections. If the hose must be routed parallel to the machine body, a BB NPT 90° elbow allows for both changing direction and transitioning to the appropriate metric connection.

This solution reduces the need for a separate NPT reduction and an additional elbow. A smaller number of components simplifies assembly and reduces the number of potential leak points.

How to complete a hydraulic connection?

For further routing of the installation, you can select appropriately terminated custom-made hydraulic hoses. The hose end should correspond to the metric side of the elbow used and the pressure requirements of the entire system.

If the installation requires other angle variants, it is also worth checking BB hydraulic elbows in other connection standards. This allows for using an element compatible with the existing system without adding random adapters.

For larger installation rebuilds, the following are also helpful: hydraulic fittings, reductions, tees, and connectors enabling compatibility of all connection points.

Frequently asked questions about BB NPT elbows

Is NPT thread the same as BSP?

No. NPT and BSP are different thread systems. Despite similar inch designations, they differ in geometry and should not be used interchangeably without an appropriate transition element.

Which BB NPT elbows are available in this category?

Currently available variants are 3/8" NPT / M18x1.5 12L and 1/2" NPT / M22x1.5 15L.

What is the working pressure of the elbows?

For products currently in this category, the stated working pressure is 315 bar.

What is the metric side of the elbow for?

The metric side allows for connecting the elbow with an appropriately selected installation element in size 12L or 15L, depending on the fitting variant.

When is it worth using an elbow instead of a straight adapter?

It is worth using an elbow when the installation must change direction by 90°, especially in limited space or when directly bending the hose would cause excessive stress.

Match the set to the NPT elbow

  • Hydraulic hose with an appropriate metric end - allows for connecting the elbow with the rest of the installation.
  • NPT connector - allows for making another transition from an NPT tapered port when a 90° direction change is not needed.
  • Metric fitting or reduction - used to adapt the further part of the system to the required connection size.
  • Hose sleeve - protects the hose in areas exposed to abrasion and contact with the machine structure.

Correct identification of the NPT thread and the metric side is crucial for making a tight connection. Matching both connections and the working pressure reduces the risk of thread damage, leaks, and subsequent downtime of the hydraulic installation.
