BSPT straight fittings - tapered thread
What are straight fittings BSPT ? BSPT straight fittings are key elements used in hydraulic systems that allow connecting hoses and components equipped with BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) tapered threads. The BSPT thread is characterized by a tapered shape, which ensures a tight connection by tightening the components without the need for additional seals. Thanks to this, they are widely used in applications requiring high tightness and resistance to high pressure. BSPT connections are made of durable materials, such as zinc-plated carbon steel, which ensures corrosion resistance and a long service life. Precisely manufactured BSPT tapered threads guarantee connection tightness, eliminating the risk of leaks even under high pressure conditions. Additionally, these fittings feature: a standard BSPT thread, compatible with other hydraulic system components, easy installation that allows for fast and secure connection of elements without the need for specialized tools, and a wide range of sizes, enabling adaptation to various installation needs. Application of straight connections with BSPT thread
BSPT fittings are used in many industries where reliability and tightness of hydraulic connections play a key role. Typical applications include: Hydraulic industry, where they are used in high-pressure hydraulic systems, automotive, in vehicle lubrication and cooling systems, agricultural and construction machinery, where they ensure the reliability of drive systems, and pneumatic installations, where tight connections of air lines are required.
Tapered pipe threads with BSPT thread
Tapered pipe threads are commonly used in power hydraulics, industrial installations, and liquid and gas transfer systems where a tight and durable connection is required without the need for additional sealing elements. A characteristic feature of this type of thread is its tapered shape, which causes self-sealing of the connection during tightening. Hydron's offer includes straight AA fittings with BSP inch threads in a tapered pipe version, intended for professional applications in hydraulic installations. These solutions are often chosen by power hydraulics service centers and machine manufacturers due to their reliability and simplicity of installation.
What are tapered pipe threads
A tapered pipe thread, most commonly found in the BSPT version, has a variable diameter along the entire length of the thread. When screwing an element with an external thread into an element with an internal thread, the thread surfaces wedge together, ensuring connection tightness. In practice, this means that the higher the tightening torque, the better the connection sealing. These types of threads are primarily used where the installation is exposed to high operating pressures and vibrations, and where resistance to leaks over a long period of operation is important.
Structure and characteristics of tapered threads
Tapered pipe threads are most often made of carbon steel with appropriate protective coatings that protect the element against corrosion. In the case of hydraulic fittings, the precision of thread manufacturing is very important, as it determines the tightness and durability of the connection. The tapered thread profile means that the connection does not rely on a face seal, but on the entire contact surface of the thread. Additionally, in mounting practice, sealing tapes, pastes, or sealing threads are often used, which increase connection safety in applications with increased requirements.
Application of BSPT tapered pipe threads
Tapered pipe threads are used in many areas of technology where connection tightness is of key importance. They are commonly used in power hydraulic systems, oil installations, lubrication systems, and in industrial machines. Straight AA fittings with BSPT threads are used to connect hydraulic hoses, pipes, and other installation elements, especially in places where it is not possible to use connections with O-ring seals. Thanks to their design, they work well both in new installations and during the modernization of existing systems.
BSP thread vs BSPT ?
BSP and BSPT threads are often used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, however, they have significant differences that affect their application and connection method. Understanding the differences between them is key to ensuring proper assembly and tightness of the systems. BSP (British Standard Pipe) is a pipe thread standard used mainly in Europe, Asia, and Australia. It is available in two variants:
- BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) – parallel thread (rectangular), also referred to as G or BSP. It is characterized by the fact that the thread diameter remains constant along the entire length, which means that to achieve tightness, it is necessary to use a seal, such as an O-ring or a sealing washer.
- BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered) – tapered thread, designated as R, which tapers towards the end, allowing for a tight connection by tightening without the need for additional seals.
