STRAIGHT CONNECTORS UNF (JIC)

Straight stud coupling body with UNF/UN-2A thread with O-RING seal / Male stud coupling with O-RING - thread UNF/UN-2A

Straight connector with external UNF threads (JIC). Connectors with two external JIC threads. One of the most popular types of connectors used in the USA. Connectors are used to connect hydraulic hoses to components such as hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, and others. One side, called the connection side, is screwed into a block or other port, while the other side has an external thread with a cone intended for screwing on a hose. This type of connector is very often used in forestry machinery.

Construction: free-cutting steel covered with zinc plating to protect against corrosion.

We also offer BSP/JIC connectors

Straight connectors UNF JIC

Straight UNF JIC connectors are hydraulic components designed for connecting hoses to blocks, valves, cylinders, pumps, and other power hydraulics components. JIC connections use a UNF thread and a characteristic 37° sealing cone. The category includes various combinations of sizes, primarily from 7/16" to 1.5/16". The connectors are made of zinc-plated free-cutting steel, and the working pressure depends on the specific variant and is up to 345 bar.

  • Element type: straight hydraulic connector
  • Connection system: UNF / JIC
  • Typical JIC thread sizes in the category: 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 3/4", 7/8", 1.1/16", 1.5/16"

How does a straight JIC connector work?

The connector creates a transition between the connection port of a device and a hydraulic hose or another system component. One side is screwed into the body of a valve, cylinder, pump, valve block, or another component. The other side allows for the connection of a component compatible with the JIC system.

In the JIC system, tightness on the hose side is achieved on a 37° conical surface. The UNF thread itself is primarily responsible for the mechanical tightening of the components. Therefore, when choosing, it is not enough to check only the diameter and thread pitch. You must also ensure that both elements use a compatible sealing system.

UNF and JIC - why shouldn't these designations be treated as the same thing?

UNF is an American fine-thread system. JIC, on the other hand, is a hydraulic connection standard that uses UNF threads and sealing surfaces with a 37° angle. In practice, the designations UNF and JIC often appear together, but they describe different features of the same connection.

This distinction is important during machine repair. An element with the correct thread may be able to be screwed on, but if it has a different sealing surface, the connection will not be correct. Therefore, when identifying a coupling, both the thread and the geometry of the sealing surface should be checked.

How to choose straight UNF JIC connectors?

First, you must determine both threads of the connector. Products in this category also appear as reductions, so both ends are not always the same size. For example, a connector may have a 1/2" UNF thread on one side and a 7/16" JIC on the other. Versions connecting other JIC system sizes are also available.

The second step is to check the connection side. In many versions, it is intended to be screwed directly into the internal thread of a hydraulic component and has an appropriate seal. On the other side, there is a connection intended for connecting to a hydraulic hose fitting.

Finally, verify the working pressure. In this category, values vary depending on the version and range from 160 to 345 bar. The parameter of a specific connector should be equal to or higher than the maximum pressure occurring in that part of the installation.

The most common error in JIC thread identification

A common mistake is identifying a thread solely by measuring its diameter with a caliper. In imperial systems, similar external diameters can occur in different connection standards. A user may therefore confuse JIC with BSP, ORFS, or another system using an imperial thread.

Before ordering, it is worth determining the external diameter of the thread, the number of threads per inch or the pitch, and the type of sealing surface. In the case of JIC, the 37° cone is a very important identification element. This helps reduce the risk of purchasing a part that can be partially screwed on but does not create a proper and tight connection.

What happens if the wrong connector is used?

Thread mismatch can lead to damage to the first threads during tightening. Even more problematic is a situation where the threads are similar to each other, but the sealing surfaces belong to different standards. The connection may then look correct and yet start to leak after the system is started.

In a high-pressure installation, the consequences can include oil leaks, pressure drops, unstable operation of the actuator, and the need to redo the connection. Excessive tightening of an incorrectly selected connector can additionally damage the seat in an expensive valve, pump, or cylinder.

Where are JIC UNF connectors used?

The JIC system is frequently encountered in mobile hydraulics and in machines using design solutions originating from the American market. Connectors of this type are used, among others, in forestry, construction, and agricultural machinery, as well as in industrial equipment.

An example would be replacing a hose in a forestry machine. The valve body has a port intended for a UNF connector, while the new hydraulic hose is terminated with a JIC fitting. The appropriate connector allows for a direct connection without adding accidental reductions and additional potential leak points.

ISO 8434-2 and SAE J514 - what do they mean in practice?

ISO 8434-2 and SAE J514 refer to tube connections using the JIC system with a 37° sealing surface. The standardization defines, among other things, the geometry of the connection and facilitates the selection of compatible elements from different manufacturers.

For the user, the most important benefit is the ability to uniquely identify the system. Simply calling an element "imperial" is too general, as BSP, BSPT, NPT, ORFS, and other standards also exist in hydraulics.

JIC or BSP - which connection to use?

The choice should not depend on preference but on the standard used in the specific machine. If the valve or block has a UNF/JIC port, a compatible JIC connector should be used. If the device uses a BSP thread, a suitable solution may be straight BSP/UNF connectors.

Connecting different standards is possible, but it requires an appropriate transition connector. Using one correct adapter is usually a better solution than building a connection from several accidental reductions.

How to complete a JIC connection with a hydraulic hose?

On the JIC side, you must select a hose fitting with a compatible thread size and conical surface. HYDRON offers hydraulic hose crimp fittings, including JIC system fittings.

If a complete hose is needed, you can use custom-made hydraulic hoses. When configuring, you should specify the hose diameter, hose length, required pressure, and the type and size of the fittings on both sides.

For more extensive modernization, it is also worth checking other straight hydraulic connectors. This allows you to choose a solution compatible with the thread in the device without multiplying additional adapters.

Match elements to the UNF JIC connector

  • JIC hydraulic hose fitting - ensures a compatible connection of the hose with a port having a 37° cone.
  • Hydraulic hose - selected based on the required flow, working pressure, and machine operating conditions.
  • BSP/UNF connector - allows for a transition between a BSP installation and a part of the system using JIC/UNF.
  • Hose guard - reduces the risk of mechanical damage in places exposed to abrasion and contact with machine parts.

Correct identification of the UNF thread, connection size, and JIC 37° cone allows for a tight and durable connection without the use of accidental reductions. Proper selection of working pressure and the cooperating hose fitting reduces the risk of leaks, thread damage, and hydraulic system downtime.

Frequently asked questions about straight UNF JIC connectors

Do UNF and JIC mean the same thing?

No. UNF specifies the type of fine thread, while JIC is a hydraulic connection system using a UNF thread and a 37° conical sealing surface.

How to recognize a JIC connection?

You should check the thread size, its pitch, and the sealing surface. A characteristic feature of the JIC connection is the 37° cone.

What working pressure do the JIC connectors in this category have?

The pressure depends on the specific variant. Among the products in this category, values from 160 to 345 bar occur, so the parameter should be checked for the selected size.

Can a JIC connector be connected to a BSP thread?

Not directly. JIC and BSP belong to different connection systems. If the installation requires a transition between them, an appropriate BSP/UNF JIC connector or adapter should be used.

What are straight JIC connectors connected to?

They are used, among others, to connect hydraulic hoses to valves, cylinders, pumps, valve blocks, and other system components equipped with the appropriate port.
