Description

Straight reducing connector MM BSP 3/8" / 1/2" stainless steel 1.4571 315 bar

Straight reducing connector MM BSP 3/8" / 1/2" is a stainless steel hydraulic connector equipped with two different male BSP threads. On one side there is BSP 3/8", and on the other larger BSP 1/2". The design allows for a direct transition between these sizes without building a connection from several adapters.

The body is made of 1.4571 stainless steel. The connector has a 60° sealing cone, is intended for use with hydraulic oil and can operate at pressures up to 315 bar. The temperature range specified for the product is from -20°C to +120°C.

Technical parameters of the BSP 3/8" / 1/2" connector

  • product type: straight hydraulic connector MM,
  • version: reducing,
  • thread 1: male BSP 3/8",
  • thread 2: male BSP 1/2",
  • BSP 3/8" thread dimension: 16.3-16.6 mm outer / 14.9-15.4 mm inner,
  • BSP 1/2" thread dimension: 20.5-20.9 mm outer / 18.6-19.0 mm inner,
  • sealing cone: 60°,
  • maximum working pressure: 315 bar,
  • working temperature: from -20°C to +120°C,
  • material: stainless steel 1.4571,
  • manufacturing standard: BS5200 / ISO 8434-6,
  • medium: hydraulic oil,
  • purpose: connecting elements of a hydraulic system.

Stainless steel BSP 3/8" to BSP 1/2" reduction

The product allows for the connection of two components equipped with different connection sizes. The smaller side has a male BSP 3/8" thread, while the larger one has a male BSP 1/2" thread.

Using a single reducing body allows for a shorter connection and limits the number of additional adapters. This is particularly useful during the modernization of existing systems, where two cooperating components have different connection diameters.

Other variants of this type can be found in the category stainless steel straight connectors.

How to identify BSP 3/8" and BSP 1/2"?

BSP inch markings are nominal values. Therefore, they should not be converted directly into millimeters and such a diameter should not be expected on the thread.

  • BSP 3/8": outer diameter approx. 16.3-16.6 mm,
  • BSP 1/2": outer diameter approx. 20.5-20.9 mm.

Measuring with a caliper allows you to quickly distinguish both sizes. However, for certain identification, the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface must also be checked.

Why is measuring the diameter alone not enough?

A similar outer diameter does not always mean the same thread system. For parts without clear markings, it is worth using a thread gauge in addition to a caliper.

This is especially important during machine repairs, when the old element is selected based on the removed part. Two threads should not be forced together just because they initially seem to fit.

60° sealing cone

The connector has a 60° sealing cone. When selecting a mating element, both the thread type and size, as well as the geometry of the surface responsible for tightness, should be checked.

Simply matching BSP 3/8" or BSP 1/2" does not guarantee a proper seal. The surfaces of the mating elements must form a compatible connection system.

Stainless steel 1.4571

The most important feature of this variant is that the body is made of 1.4571 stainless steel. This distinguishes it from standard steel connectors, whose surface is usually protected by a galvanic coating.

Stainless steel connectors are used, among others, where the system design requirements necessitate the use of stainless elements or where environmental conditions are more demanding than in standard hydraulic installations.

When selecting the material, the entire operating environment, the medium, and the materials of the other system components should be considered. A full group of such elements can be found in the category stainless steel hydraulic connectors.

Working pressure up to 315 bar

The maximum working pressure specified for this particular reduction is 315 bar. This parameter should not be automatically transferred to other connector sizes, even if they belong to the same BSP group.

In a complete system, the allowable pressure is limited by the component with the lowest rating. Therefore, hoses, fittings, valves, quick couplings, and other connections must also be checked.

Ready-made solutions can be found in the category assembled hydraulic hoses.

Does the transition from 1/2" to 3/8" affect the flow?

Reducing from BSP 1/2" to BSP 3/8" reduces the cross-section available for the flowing medium. When selecting a connector, not only the mechanical compatibility of the threads but also the required flow in a given circuit must be considered.

If the cross-section is too small relative to the flow rate, the oil velocity and pressure losses may increase. The reduction size should be matched to the parameters of the entire hydraulic system.

Operating temperature from -20°C to +120°C

The product datasheet specifies an operating temperature range from -20°C to +120°C. This value applies to the connector itself.

The allowable temperature of the complete system should always be determined based on the limitations of the hoses, seals, valves, and other elements used.

BS5200 / ISO 8434-6

The connector is assigned to the standard BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. Standard information facilitates system connection identification and assists in selecting a mating element.

When replacing an existing part, it is best to compare not only the BSP label but also the thread diameters, their pitch, cone design, pressure, and material.

Application of the BSP 3/8" / 1/2" connector

The stainless steel reduction can be used to make connections in hydraulic systems where a transition between BSP 3/8" and BSP 1/2" is required.

  • power hydraulics systems,
  • agricultural and orchard machinery,
  • forestry machinery,
  • construction machinery,
  • industrial equipment,
  • hydraulic power units,
  • installations requiring stainless steel elements,
  • repairs and modernizations of hydraulic systems.

How to choose a BSP 3/8" / 1/2" reduction?

Before ordering, it is worth confirming:

  • whether two male threads are needed,
  • whether the smaller side has BSP 3/8",
  • whether the larger side has BSP 1/2",
  • the outer diameter of both threads,
  • thread pitch,
  • 60° sealing cone compatibility,
  • required working pressure,
  • required flow,
  • whether 1.4571 stainless steel is the required material.

If the new connector is selected based on a part removed from a machine, it is best to measure it with a caliper and a thread gauge. This limits the risk of confusing BSP with another standard.

Selecting a hydraulic hose for a BSP connector

Thread type is only one parameter of a complete hydraulic hose. The DN diameter, hose construction, required working pressure, length, and both ends must also be selected.

You can prepare the appropriate configuration in the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What threads does the BSP 3/8" / 1/2" connector have?

The connector has two male threads: BSP 3/8" on one side and BSP 1/2" on the other.

What is the maximum working pressure?

The maximum working pressure specified for this product is 315 bar.

What material is the connector made of?

The connector is made of 1.4571 stainless steel.

How to identify BSP 3/8" and BSP 1/2" threads?

A male BSP 3/8" thread has an outer diameter of approximately 16.3-16.6 mm, while BSP 1/2" is approximately 20.5-20.9 mm. For certain identification, the thread pitch should also be checked.

Does the connector have a sealing cone?

Yes. The connector has a 60° sealing cone, so the mating element should have compatible connection geometry.
