Description

Straight fitting BB BSP 1/2" 315 bar

Straight fitting BB BSP 1/2" is a steel hydraulic nipple equipped with two identical BSP 1/2" male threads. It is used for the direct connection of two system components having compatible BSP female connections. Since both sides have the same size, the fitting does not change the connection diameter.

The element features a 60° sealing cone and is designed for use in power hydraulic systems. The body is made of free-cutting steel, and the surface is protected with zinc plating with white passivation. The maximum working pressure for this model is 315 bar.

BSP 1/2" hydraulic nipple with two male threads

The designation BB indicates a design having male threads on both sides. In this model, both connections have the size BSP 1/2", therefore the element is used for a simple connection of two compatible parts of a hydraulic system.

This type of nipple can be used during the construction of new installations, replacement of a damaged element, or modernization of an existing system. The simple design allows making a connection without using additional adapters.

Other sizes and reducing versions can be found in the category BSP inch straight fittings.

BSP 1/2" - one of the popular sizes in hydraulics

The BSP 1/2" thread is a frequently encountered connection size in power hydraulics. It is found in hoses, valves, distributors, and other elements of hydraulic fittings, among others.

The popularity of the size does not mean, however, that every thread described as 1/2" is the same. There are various standards for inch threads in hydraulics, which is why it is necessary to confirm before assembly that the mating element has the correct BSP connection.

How to recognize a BSP 1/2" thread?

The BSP 1/2" designation is a nominal designation. This does not mean that the actual outer diameter of the thread is 12.7 mm. For the presented fitting, the technical data sheet specifies an outer diameter in the range of approximately 20.5-20.9 mm.

If during measurement with a caliper you get a result of approximately 20.7 mm, this may indicate BSP 1/2". Measuring the diameter, however, is only one of the stages of identification. It is worth additionally checking the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface.

Why is BSP 1/2" approximately 21 mm, and not 12.7 mm?

This is one of the more common sources of mistakes when selecting hydraulic fittings on your own. BSP sizes are nominal designations of pipe threads and do not correspond directly to the actual outer diameter.

Therefore, a direct conversion of 1/2 inch to 12.7 mm does not allow correctly recognizing the thread. For BSP 1/2", one should expect an outer diameter of approximately 20.5-20.9 mm.

60° sealing cone

The fitting has a 60° sealing cone. This means that when selecting a mating element, you must check not only the size of the BSP thread, but also the design of the surface responsible for sealing.

This is of great importance when working under pressure. Two elements can be mechanically screwed together, but this does not yet mean that they form a proper and tight hydraulic connection. The thread and sealing surface should be compatible with each other.

Working pressure 315 bar

The maximum working pressure of the fitting is 315 bar. This parameter allows the element to be used in many standard power hydraulic systems, provided that the parameters of the other system components are maintained.

The pressure of the entire system is always limited by its weakest element. Therefore, you must also verify the hoses, fittings, valves, distributors, quick couplings, and other fittings.

If you are completing an entire connection, also check crimped hydraulic hoses available in the HYDRON offer.

Free-cutting steel protected by zinc plating

The fitting body is made of free-cutting steel. The surface is protected by zinc plating with white passivation. Such execution is commonly used in fasteners designed for typical power hydraulic systems.

The protective layer protects the surface of the steel element from the influence of typical environmental conditions. For applications requiring increased corrosion resistance, an appropriate variant made of stainless steel should be considered.

Steel or stainless steel fitting?

The choice of material should result from the actual working conditions of the installation. Standard execution in free-cutting steel with surface protection is suitable for many typical applications in power hydraulics.

If the installation operates in an environment requiring increased material resistance, a counterpart made of stainless steel can be selected. Also available in HYDRON are stainless steel straight fittings in various sizes and configurations.

Working temperature from -20°C to +120°C

The working temperature range specified for the fitting is from -20°C to +120°C. Hydraulic oil is indicated as the working medium.

When designing a complete installation, however, one should also check the limitations of hoses, seals, valves, and other components. The permissible temperature of the entire system is determined by the element with the lowest temperature resistance.

BS5200 / ISO 8434-6 standard

For the BSP connector, the execution is specified as compliant with BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. The connection standard is an important element of fitting identification, because merely measuring the thread diameter is not always sufficient for proper selection.

When replacing an element, it is worth comparing the thread size, its pitch, and the design of the sealing surface with the existing connection.

Application of the BSP 1/2" fitting

The BB BSP 1/2" fitting can be used wherever a simple connection of two compatible hydraulic elements equipped with BSP 1/2" connections is required.

  • power hydraulic systems,
  • agricultural machinery,
  • orchard machinery,
  • forestry machinery,
  • construction machinery,
  • industrial equipment,
  • oil installations,
  • repairs of hydraulic systems,
  • modernization of machinery and equipment.

BSP 1/2" fitting or reducer?

This model has BSP 1/2" on both sides, therefore it is not a reducing fitting. Its task is to connect two elements with the same connection size.

If one of the elements has a different thread, a reducing version must be used, for example, BSP 1/4" / 1/2", BSP 3/8" / 1/2", BSP 1/2" / 3/4" or another configuration tailored to the specific installation.

Replacement designations for the BSP 1/2" fitting

When searching for a replacement part, catalog designations used by different manufacturers can be useful. For the presented variant, the HYDRON data sheet specifies:

  • Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.69.08.08,
  • Vitillo: ANGG0808,
  • type designation: 1B-08,
  • alternative designation: XG 1/2".

When selecting a replacement, however, you must always compare all technical parameters, not just the catalog symbol.

How to correctly select a BSP 1/2" fitting?

Before ordering, it is worth checking both elements to be connected. For the presented model, the most important parameters are:

  • first side: male BSP 1/2",
  • second side: male BSP 1/2",
  • outer thread diameter: approximately 20.5-20.9 mm,
  • sealing system: 60° cone,
  • working pressure: maximum 315 bar,
  • working temperature: from -20°C to +120°C,
  • material: free-cutting steel,
  • protection: zinc plating with white passivation.

If you are identifying a connection based on a fitting removed from a machine, measure the diameter with a caliper and additionally check the thread pitch. This helps limit the risk of confusing BSP with another standard of similar dimensions.

Selection of a hydraulic hose for BSP 1/2"

When assembling a hydraulic hose, the thread size alone is not enough. You must also select the inner diameter of the hose, its construction, the required working pressure, length, and appropriate fittings.

To prepare the right configuration, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator, which enables the selection of a hose and appropriate fittings for a specific application.

What to pay attention to during assembly?

Before making a connection, check the condition of both threads and sealing surfaces. The elements should be clean and free of mechanical damage.

If the fitting tightens with unusually high resistance right from the first turns, do not force it. This may indicate an incorrect size, pitch, or another thread standard.

Hydraulic fittings in HYDRON

In the HYDRON offer you will find a wide selection of hydraulic fittings designed for the construction, repair, and modernization of power hydraulic systems. Available are BSP, BSPT, JIC/UNF, ORFS, NPT connectors, and various metric connections.

For installations requiring greater material resistance, there are also available stainless steel hydraulic fittings.
