BB 3/8" BSP fitting with two male threads

The designation BB is used for fittings with male threads on both sides. In this model, both connections are of the same size BSP 3/8", which is why the fitting does not act as a reducer. Its purpose is to create a simple connection between two compatible installation components.

Such a design can be used, among other things, when connecting fittings, hoses with appropriate end fittings, and other components featuring BSP 3/8" connections.

If you need different diameters or a reducer version, check the category BSP inch straight fittings.

How to identify a BSP 3/8" thread?

The BSP 3/8" designation is a nominal value and does not mean the actual outer diameter of the thread is 3/8 inch. According to this fitting's parameters, the outer diameter of the BSP 3/8" thread is in the range of approximately 16.3-16.6 mm.

If measuring with a caliper gives a result close to 16.5 mm, this may indicate a BSP 3/8" thread. However, measuring the diameter alone should not be the sole basis for identification. It is also worth checking the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface.

60° sealing cone

The fitting has a 60° sealing cone. When selecting a mating component, you should therefore verify not only the BSP 3/8" thread size but also the design of the surface responsible for connection tightness.

This is particularly important in fluid power hydraulic systems operating under high pressure. The ability to screw two components together does not guarantee a proper connection. The thread and the sealing surface must be compatible with each other.

Working pressure up to 350 bar

The allowable working pressure of the fitting is 350 bar. This is a crucial parameter when assembling hydraulic system components, especially in systems with high operating pressure values.

However, this does not mean that every system equipped with this fitting can operate at 350 bar. The allowable pressure of the complete installation is limited by its weakest component. Therefore, you should also check the parameters of hoses, end fittings, valves, quick couplings, manifolds, and other components in the system.

If you need a ready-made connection, check out the crimped hydraulic hoses available in the HYDRON offer.

Stainless steel 1.4571 in hydraulic fittings

The fitting body is made of stainless steel 1.4571. The stainless steel version is primarily chosen in installations where, in addition to adequate mechanical strength, increased material corrosion resistance is essential.

This is important, among other things, in equipment operating in harsher environmental conditions, with increased humidity, and wherever the installation design requires the use of stainless steel components.

You will find the complete group of such products in the category stainless steel straight fittings.

Steel 1.4571 and 316Ti designation

Steel 1.4571 is a stainless steel grade used in technical components requiring enhanced corrosion resistance. However, when selecting fittings for a specific medium, the actual operating conditions of the installation must always be considered.

Material resistance depends on, among other things, the type of medium, its temperature, chemical concentration, and contact time. Therefore, for applications other than typical oil hydraulics, it is always worth verifying the material compatibility of the entire installation.

Temperature range from -20°C to +120°C

For the BSP 3/8" fitting, the product datasheet specifies an operating temperature range from -20°C to +120°C. This parameter applies to the fitting, so when designing a complete system, you must additionally verify the allowable temperatures of the other components.

Hydraulic hoses, seals, valves, and other components may have their own limitations. The maximum operating temperature of the complete installation should match the parameters of its weakest component.

Where is the BSP 3/8" stainless steel fitting used?

The fitting can be used to make simple connections in hydraulic installations equipped with BSP 3/8" connections. Connections of this type are popular in many mobile machines and industrial devices.

  • fluid power hydraulic systems,
  • agricultural machinery,
  • orchard machinery,
  • forestry machinery,
  • construction machinery,
  • industrial equipment,
  • oil installations,
  • hydraulic system repairs,
  • modernization of machinery and equipment,
  • installations requiring the use of stainless steel components.

When to choose the stainless steel version over the standard one?

Under typical working conditions, steel hydraulic fittings with a protective coating are often used. The stainless steel version is a good choice when installation requirements also involve increased material resistance.

When selecting, it is worth considering the mounting location, working environment, medium, and the material of other installation components. The use of a stainless steel version should result from actual technical conditions, not exclusively from the thread size.

3/8" fitting or 3/8" reducer?

This model features a BSP 3/8" on both sides, which is why it is a straight fitting and not a reducer. If one of the connected components has a different connection size, a reducer variant will be required, for example, BSP 1/4" / 3/8", BSP 3/8" / 1/2", or another configuration appropriate for the specific installation.

Therefore, before purchasing, both components to be connected must be measured. This helps avoid a situation where the correct thread standard is chosen, but the wrong diameter on one of the sides.

How to correctly select a BSP 3/8" fitting?

Before ordering, it is worth confirming the most important features of the connection:

  • first side: male BSP 3/8",
  • second side: male BSP 3/8",
  • outer thread diameter: approx. 16.3-16.6 mm,
  • sealing system: 60° cone,
  • working pressure: maximum 350 bar,
  • working temperature: from -20°C to +120°C,
  • material: stainless steel 1.4571.

If you are identifying a component based on an old fitting removed from a machine, in addition to measuring the diameter, it is also worth using a thread pitch gauge. This allows you to confirm the pitch and reduce the risk of confusing BSP with another standard of a similar diameter.

Installation of the BSP hydraulic fitting

Before installation, check the condition of the threads and sealing surfaces. They should be clean and free of mechanical damage. Dirt or deformation can make it difficult to create a proper connection.

If the fitting threads in with unusual resistance right from the first turns, do not force it. This may indicate an incorrect size, a different pitch, or an incompatible thread standard.

Selection of a hydraulic hose for BSP 3/8"

When creating a complete hose assembly, you must select not only the end fitting thread. The inner diameter of the hose, its construction, required working pressure, temperature, and medium type are also important.

To determine the configuration, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator, where you can select the hose parameters and appropriate end fittings.
