Description
Straight reducing MM BSP 3/8" / 5/8" fitting 315 bar
Straight MM BSP 3/8" / 5/8" fitting is a steel hydraulic connector designed for the direct connection of two elements having different BSP connection sizes. On one side there is BSP 3/8" male thread, on the other BSP 5/8" male thread. This design allows for a reduction in a single body, without adding several subsequent adapters.
The fitting has a 60° sealing cone and is intended for use in hydraulic systems. The construction from free-cutting steel and surface protection with zinc coating and white passivation perform well in typical power hydraulics operating conditions. The allowable working pressure for this model is 315 bar.

BSP 3/8" to BSP 5/8" reduction
Different diameters of both ends make it a reducing fitting. It enables a simple transition between a BSP 3/8" connection and a larger BSP 5/8". Both sides have male threads.
This solution is useful both during the construction of new installations and during repairs and modernization of existing systems. It allows for matching components with different connection diameters without creating an extensive set of adapters.
60° sealing cone in BSP connections
The fitting utilizes a 60° sealing cone. When selecting a matching element, one should therefore check not only the thread size and type, but also the design of the surface responsible for sealing the connection.
This is especially important in hydraulics operating under high pressure. The possibility of mechanically screwing two elements together does not yet guarantee that they form a correct and tight hydraulic connection.
How to identify a BSP 3/8" thread?
A BSP 3/8" thread does not have an actual diameter of 3/8 inch. The designation is nominal. According to the parameters of this product, a 3/8" BSP male thread has a diameter of approximately 16.3-16.6 mm.
So if the caliper shows a value around 16.5 mm, it may indicate BSP 3/8". When identifying an unknown connection, it is also worth checking the thread pitch and its geometry.
Unusual BSP 5/8" size
The other side of the fitting consists of a BSP 5/8" male thread. According to the HYDRON datasheet, its outer diameter is within the range of approximately 22.6-22.9 mm.
The 5/8" size is encountered less frequently than the popular BSP 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4". For this reason, when replacing a fitting, it is particularly important to carefully check the existing connection instead of selecting an element based solely on approximate diameter.
Working pressure 315 bar
The allowable working pressure of the fitting is 315 bar. Thanks to this, the element can be used in many standard power hydraulics systems, provided that the parameters of all other components of the installation are maintained.
The pressure of the entire system is limited by its weakest element. When assembling an installation, it is therefore necessary to also verify the parameters of crimped hydraulic hoses, fittings, valves, quick couplers, and other hardware.
Free-cutting steel protected with zinc
The body of the fitting is made of free-cutting steel. The surface has been additionally protected with zinc coating and white passivation. This is a solution commonly used in the production of fastening elements intended for typical power hydraulics systems.
In the case of installations working in environments requiring higher material resistance, it is worth considering an appropriately selected stainless steel version. The fitting material should be selected for the actual working conditions and the medium used.
Operating temperature range
For the MM BSP 3/8" / 5/8" fitting, the manufacturer specifies a temperature range from -20°C to +120°C. Hydraulic oil has been indicated as the working medium.
When determining the allowable temperature of the entire installation, hoses, seals, and other components must also be taken into account. Each of them may have its own temperature limitations.
Application of the BSP 3/8" / 5/8" fitting
The fitting can be used wherever a simple connection of two hydraulic elements with different BSP sizes is required. The reducing design is particularly practical during repairs and modernization of machines where different connection size standards occur.
- power hydraulics,
- agricultural machinery,
- orchard machinery,
- forestry machinery,
- construction machinery,
- industrial equipment,
- hydraulic system repairs,
- modernization of installations and machines.
Fewer adapters, simpler connection
A direct transition from BSP 3/8" to BSP 5/8" allows for reducing the number of elements needed to perform a reduction. Instead of connecting several adapters, a single body with appropriately selected threads can be used.
This is especially beneficial where assembly space is limited. A smaller number of elements also means fewer threaded connections requiring proper installation and sealing.
How to choose the right fitting?
Before ordering, it is worth checking both connections in the machine. In the case of this model, the configuration is as follows:
- first side: male BSP 3/8",
- second side: male BSP 5/8",
- sealing system: 60° cone,
- working pressure: maximum 315 bar,
- operating temperature: from -20°C to +120°C.
If you are identifying a fitting based on an old element, it is worth taking a precise measurement of both threads with a caliper and additionally checking their pitch. This reduces the risk of confusing similar sizes.
Hydraulic fittings and hoses at HYDRON
At HYDRON, a wide selection of hydraulic fittings is available for the construction, repair, and modernization of power hydraulics systems. The offer includes various configurations of BSP, BSPT, metric, JIC/UNF, ORFS, and other standards used in hydraulics.
If you need a complete hose for a specific machine, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator. It allows you to select the hose length and the appropriate endings directly for the required connections.
In places where the hose may rub against the frame, machine structure, or other elements, it is also worth using spiral guards for hydraulic hoses.
