Description

Straight adapter BB BSP 1/4" 350 bar

Straight adapter BB BSP 1/4" is a steel hydraulic connector equipped with two identical male BSP 1/4" threads. It is used for the direct connection of two system components having compatible BSP ports. Because the same thread size is used on both sides, the adapter does not perform a diameter reduction.

The component features a 60° sealing cone and is designed for use in power hydraulics systems. The body is made of free-cutting steel, and the surface is protected with zinc plating with white passivation. The permissible working pressure for this model is up to 350 bar, and the operating temperature range is from -20°C to +120°C.

BSP 1/4" hydraulic nipple with two male threads

The designation BB indicates an adapter having male threads on both sides. In the presented model, both ports have the size BSP 1/4", therefore the component allows making a simple connection of two compatible parts of the system.

This type of nipple can be used both during the construction of a new system and when repairing or modernizing an existing installation. The simple design enables the connection of components without using an additional reducer.

Other diameters and reducing variants can be found in the category BSP inch straight adapters.

How to recognize a BSP 1/4" thread?

The BSP 1/4" designation is a nominal value and does not directly correspond to the actual external diameter of the thread. According to the product parameters, the male BSP 1/4" thread has a diameter of about 12.9-13.1 mm.

If a measurement made with a caliper gives a result around 13 mm, this may indicate exactly BSP 1/4". However, for a reliable identification, the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface must also be checked.

Why doesn't BSP 1/4" have a diameter of 6.35 mm?

This is one of the most common mistakes when identifying hydraulic connectors on your own. A direct conversion of 1/4 inch yields 6.35 mm; however, the BSP 1/4" designation does not determine the actual external thread diameter.

In the presented product, the external diameter is about 12.9-13.1 mm. BSP sizes should therefore be treated as nominal pipe thread designations, not as a dimension intended for direct conversion from inches to millimeters.

60° sealing cone

The adapter features a 60° sealing cone. When selecting a mating component, one must therefore check not only the BSP 1/4" size, but also the design of the surface responsible for the tightness of the connection.

This is of particular importance in high-pressure hydraulics. The ability to mechanically screw two components together does not automatically mean that they form a proper and leak-tight connection. The thread and the sealing surfaces should belong to a compatible system.

Working pressure 350 bar

The permissible working pressure of the presented adapter is 350 bar. This is an important parameter that allows the component to be used in many demanding power hydraulics systems.

However, this does not mean that every system equipped with this adapter can safely operate at 350 bar. The maximum pressure of a complete installation is always limited by the component with the lowest permissible parameters.

When assembling the installation, it is therefore necessary to verify the parameters of crimped hydraulic hoses, fittings, valves, quick couplings, directional control valves, and other armatures.

Small adapter, high working pressure

BSP 1/4" is a relatively small port size; however, the presented model has a permissible working pressure of 350 bar. This shows why the thread size should not be directly equated with the permissible pressure of the component.

Each adapter variant should be selected based on its own technical data sheet. Pressure parameters must not be automatically transferred between different diameters.

Free-cutting steel and zinc plating with white passivation

The body of the adapter is made of free-cutting steel. The surface is protected with zinc plating with white passivation. This is a commonly used solution in fasteners intended for standard power hydraulics systems.

The surface protection helps limit the impact of typical environmental conditions on the steel. The material of the adapter should, however, always be selected according to the actual operating conditions of the device.

Steel or stainless steel BSP 1/4" adapter?

For many standard hydraulic installations, an adapter made of free-cutting steel protected with zinc plating is an appropriate solution. However, if the working environment requires increased material resistance, a stainless version can be considered.

The HYDRON offer also includes a stainless steel BSP 1/4" adapter and other stainless steel adapters. The material should be matched to the medium, temperature, and working environment of the specific installation.

Operating temperature from -20°C to +120°C

For the BSP 1/4" adapter, the product sheet provides an operating temperature range from -20°C to +120°C. Hydraulic oil is indicated as the working medium.

When determining the permissible temperature of the entire installation, the parameters of the hose, fittings, seals, valves, and other components must also be checked. The maximum system temperature may be limited by the component with the lowest temperature resistance.

Standard BS5200 / ISO 8434-6

For the BSP connector, the product sheet indicates compliance with BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. The manufacturing standard is vital information when identifying mating components.

When replacing an existing adapter, you should not be guided solely by the diameter measured with a caliper. You must also take into account the thread type, its pitch, and the sealing system.

BSP 1/4" and other 1/4" threads

In hydraulics, the term "1/4" thread" is not sufficient for an unambiguous selection of a component. Various inch port standards can be encountered, which may have similar nominal designations but differ in geometry and sealing method.

Therefore, when replacing an old adapter, it is necessary to confirm that we are dealing exactly with BSP 1/4", and not, for example, another type of inch thread.

Application of the BSP 1/4" adapter

The adapter can be used wherever a simple connection of two compatible system components equipped with BSP 1/4" ports is required.

  • power hydraulics systems,
  • agricultural machinery,
  • orchard machinery,
  • forestry machinery,
  • construction machinery,
  • industrial equipment,
  • oil installations,
  • repairs of hydraulic systems,
  • modernization of machines and equipment.

BSP 1/4" adapter or reducer?

This model has BSP 1/4" on both sides, which is why it is a classic straight adapter and does not change the port diameter.

If one of the connected components has a different diameter, a reducing adapter will be needed, for example BSP 1/4" / 3/8", BSP 1/4" / 1/2", or BSP 1/4" / 3/4". The BSP adapters category includes many configurations allowing the component to be tailored to a specific system.

Replacement designations for the BSP 1/4" adapter

When searching for a replacement part, designations used by different manufacturers can be helpful. The HYDRON product sheet provides for this variant:

  • Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.69.04.04,
  • Vitillo: ANGG0404,
  • type designation: 1B-04,
  • alternative designation: XG 1/4".

Designations can make it easier to find an equivalent, but before using a replacement, you should always compare the full technical parameters of both components.

How to correctly select a BSP 1/4" adapter?

Before ordering, check both components that are to be connected. In the case of this model, the most important parameters are:

  • first side: male BSP 1/4",
  • second side: male BSP 1/4",
  • external thread diameter: about 12.9-13.1 mm,
  • sealing system: 60° cone,
  • working pressure: maximum 350 bar,
  • operating temperature: from -20°C to +120°C,
  • material: free-cutting steel,
  • surface protection: zinc plating with white passivation.

If the component is selected on the basis of an old adapter removed from a machine, it is worth accurately measuring the thread with a caliper and checking its pitch. This limits the risk of confusing BSP with another standard.

Selection of a fitting for BSP 1/4"

When making a hydraulic hose, you also need to pay attention to the type of fitting mating with the adapter. On the HYDRON website, you can find, among others, DKR fittings with a BSP 1/4" thread intended for appropriate hose diameters.

The thread size itself is not enough to make a hose assembly. The hose diameter, hose design, required working pressure, and overall length must also be selected.

HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator

If you need a complete hose assembly prepared for a specific machine, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator.

The configurator allows you to determine the inner diameter of the hose, required working pressure, hose model, length, and the type of fittings. This facilitates the preparation of a complete hose assembly tailored to a specific application.

Hydraulic adapters at HYDRON

In the HYDRON offer, you will find a wide selection of hydraulic adapters intended for the construction, repair, and modernization of power hydraulics systems. BSP, BSPT, JIC/UNF, ORFS, NPT, and various metric connections are available.
