Description

Straight reducing connector BB BSP 1/4" / 1/2" 315 bar

Straight connector BB BSP 1/4" / 1/2" is a steel hydraulic fitting with two male BSP threads of different sizes. On one side there is a BSP 1/4" thread, and on the other a larger BSP 1/2" thread. The element allows for a direct transition between these diameters without using several additional adapters.

The connector has a 60° sealing cone. The body is made of free-cutting steel protected by zinc plating with white passivation. The maximum working pressure is 315 bar, and the working temperature range is from -20°C to +120°C.

Technical parameters of the BSP 1/4" / 1/2" connector

  • product type: straight hydraulic connector BB,
  • type: reducing connector,
  • thread 1: male BSP 1/4",
  • thread 2: male BSP 1/2",
  • BSP 1/4" thread dimension: 12.9-13.1 mm external / 11.4-11.9 mm internal,
  • BSP 1/2" thread dimension: 20.5-20.9 mm external / 18.6-19.0 mm internal,
  • sealing cone angle: 60°,
  • working pressure: 315 bar,

  • material: free-cutting steel,
  • surface protection: zinc plating with white passivation,
  • manufacturing standard: BS5200 / ISO 8434-6,
  • medium: hydraulic oil,
  • purpose: connecting elements of a hydraulic installation,
  • designation according to Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.67.08.04,
  • designation according to Vitillo: ARGG0804,
  • alternative designation: 1B-04-08 / XGR 1/4"-1/2".

BSP 1/4" to BSP 1/2" reduction

The connector allows for a direct connection of an element with a female BSP 1/4" thread to a component having a female BSP 1/2" thread. Both connections of the connector are male threads.

The one-piece reduction allows for limiting the number of additional adapters and shortening the entire connection. Other diameter combinations can be found in the category straight and reducing BSP connectors.

How to recognize a BSP 1/4" thread?

The male BSP 1/4" thread has a diameter of approximately 12.9-13.1 mm. The 1/4" designation is a nominal value, so the actual thread diameter is not 6.35 mm.

Measurement with a caliper in the range of 13 mm is an important clue in identifying BSP 1/4". For a reliable selection, it is also worth checking the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface.

How to recognize a BSP 1/2" thread?

The other side of the connector has a male BSP 1/2" thread with a diameter of approximately 20.5-20.9 mm. Here too, the inch designation is nominal.

If the measurement of the male thread gives a result around 20.7 mm, it may indicate BSP 1/2". For confirmation, the thread pitch should additionally be verified.

60° sealing cone

The connector has a 60° sealing cone. When selecting matching components, it is therefore necessary to verify not only the thread sizes but also the design of the surfaces responsible for the tightness of the connection.

Simply screwing two parts together mechanically does not mean they are fully compatible. In a correctly selected connection, both the threads and the sealing method should match.

Working pressure 315 bar

The maximum working pressure specified for this reduction is 315 bar. This parameter should be compared with the actual maximum pressure occurring in the installation.

The allowable pressure of the entire system is determined by its weakest element. When assembling the installation, the parameters of hoses, fittings, quick couplers, valves, and other equipment should also be checked.

If you need a complete connection, also check crimped hydraulic hoses available at HYDRON.

1/2" to 1/4" reduction and flow

The transition from BSP 1/2" to BSP 1/4" means a significant reduction in the cross-section of the connection. When selecting a connector, it is therefore worth considering not only the thread compatibility but also the required medium flow and the diameter of the hoses.

A cross-section that is too small relative to the required flow can increase oil velocity and cause additional pressure losses. Therefore, the reduction should be selected taking the entire hydraulic system into account.

Free-cutting steel and zinc plating with white passivation

The body of the connector is made of free-cutting steel. The surface has been protected with zinc plating with white passivation. This is a finish used in steel fastener elements intended for standard power hydraulic systems.

The material should always be selected according to the actual working conditions, the medium, and the environment in which the installation operates.

Working temperature from -20°C to +120°C

The permissible working temperature range of the connector is from -20°C to +120°C. Hydraulic oil is indicated as the medium on the product sheet.

When determining the permissible temperature of the entire installation, the parameters of hoses, seals, valves, and other components must also be taken into account.

Standard BS5200 / ISO 8434-6

The connector belongs to the group of BSP connections made according to BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. Information about the standard helps during the identification and selection of compatible elements.

When replacing an old connector, it is worth comparing both thread sizes, their diameter, pitch, and the design of the sealing surfaces.

Application of the BSP 1/4" / 1/2" connector

The reduction can be used wherever a direct transition between a BSP 1/4" and BSP 1/2" connection is required. It works well both when building new installations and during repairs and modernizations of existing systems.

  • power hydraulic systems,
  • agricultural and orchard machinery,
  • forestry machinery,
  • construction machinery,
  • industrial equipment,
  • hydraulic power units,
  • oil installations,
  • repairs and modernizations of hydraulic systems.

Alternative markings of the connector

The catalog markings provided for this variant can be helpful in identifying a replacement:

  • Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.67.08.04,
  • Vitillo: ARGG0804,
  • symbol: 1B-04-08,
  • alternative designation: XGR 1/4"-1/2".

Before using an equivalent, the full technical specification should be compared, not just the catalog symbol.

How to properly select a BSP 1/4" / 1/2" reduction?

Before ordering, the most important parameters should be confirmed:

  • side 1: male BSP 1/4" thread,
  • side 2: male BSP 1/2" thread,
  • BSP 1/4" external diameter: approximately 12.9-13.1 mm,
  • BSP 1/2" external diameter: approximately 20.5-20.9 mm,
  • sealing cone: 60°,
  • maximum working pressure: 315 bar,
  • working temperature: from -20°C to +120°C.

If you are selecting a connector based on an old element removed from a machine, measure both threads with a caliper and additionally check their pitch.

Selection of a complete hydraulic hose

The size of the connection itself is not enough to properly make a hose. You must also select the internal diameter of the hose, its construction, the required working pressure, length, and the correct endings.

To prepare a complete hose, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator.

Frequently Asked Questions
