BSP 1.1/2" to BSP 2" reduction
The different sizes of both connections make the product act as a BSP 1.1/2" / 2" reduction. It allows directly connecting an element equipped with a BSP 1.1/2" thread to a component with a larger BSP 2" thread. Both sides of the adapter have male threads.
Such a solution is useful when building new installations and during repairs and modernization of hydraulic systems where large connections with different diameters are present. The use of a single body avoids creating a reduction from several separate adapters.
Other sizes and configurations can be found in the category BSP straight inch adapters.
Large BSP 1.1/2" and BSP 2" connections
BSP 1.1/2" and BSP 2" belong to the larger connection sizes used in hydraulics. They are mainly encountered in installations where a larger connection cross-section and correspondingly high medium flow are required.
In the case of the presented adapter, the external diameter of the smaller thread is approximately 47.4-47.8 mm, while the larger one is approximately 59.2-59.6 mm. The difference is distinct and makes it easy to recognize the reducing nature of the component.
How to recognize a BSP 1.1/2" thread?
The BSP 1.1/2" designation is a nominal value. Therefore, it does not mean that the actual external diameter of the thread is exactly 38.1 mm. According to the product parameters, the BSP 1.1/2" male thread has a diameter of approximately 47.4-47.8 mm.
If you get a result around 47.6 mm when measuring with a caliper, this may indicate precisely BSP 1.1/2". For certain identification, it is additionally worth checking the thread pitch and the design of the sealing surface.
How to recognize a BSP 2" thread?
The other side of the adapter has a BSP 2" male thread. According to the product parameters, its external diameter is approximately 59.2-59.6 mm.
The 2" designation is also nominal. A direct conversion of two inches to 50.8 mm does not correspond to the actual external diameter of this thread.
Why is BSP 2" almost 60 mm?
BSP threads are pipe threads, therefore their inch designations do not directly correspond to the diameter measured with a caliper. This is one of the most common causes of errors during the identification of hydraulic components.
For the presented adapter, BSP 1.1/2" has an external diameter of approximately 47.6 mm, whereas BSP 2" is approximately 59.4 mm. These values are much more useful when recognizing an old element than a simple conversion of inches to millimeters.
60° sealing cone
The adapter features a 60° sealing cone. Therefore, when selecting a mating component, one should check not only the nominal size of the BSP thread, but also the design of the surface responsible for the tightness of the connection.
This is of particular importance in hydraulic systems operating under pressure. The mere fact that two elements can be screwed together mechanically does not mean that they form a correct and tight hydraulic connection.
Working pressure of 100 bar
The maximum working pressure specified for this adapter is 100 bar. This parameter should be checked particularly carefully before assembly, because a large connection diameter does not automatically mean a high allowable pressure.
Individual sizes of BSP adapters can have different operating pressure values. For this specific variant, the correct value is 100 bar, and parameters from smaller adapters should not be transferred.
When completing the entire system, one should also check the parameters of crimped hydraulic hoses, fittings, quick couplings, valves, and other armatures.
A large thread does not mean a higher pressure
The size of the connection and the allowable working pressure are two separate parameters. A larger diameter primarily means a larger connection cross-section, but it does not directly determine the pressure resistance of a specific adapter.
Therefore, the presented BSP 1.1/2" / 2" reduction has a working pressure of 100 bar, even though smaller BSP adapters may be designed to operate at significantly higher pressures.
Diameter reduction and oil flow
The transition from BSP 2" to BSP 1.1/2" causes a change in the connection cross-section. Therefore, when selecting such a reduction, it is necessary to consider not only the possibility of mechanical connection of elements, but also the required flow in the installation.
The hose diameter, flow rate, oil viscosity, and allowable pressure drops should be analyzed together. Excessive restriction of the cross-section may affect the operating characteristics of the hydraulic system.
Free-cutting steel protected by zinc plating
The body of the adapter is made of free-cutting steel. The surface is protected by zinc plating with white passivation. This is a popular solution used in steel fasteners intended for typical power hydraulic systems.
However, the material should always be matched to the environmental conditions and the medium. If the installation requires increased corrosion resistance, it is worth considering an appropriately selected stainless steel version.
Operating temperature from -20°C to +120°C
The operating temperature range specified for the adapter is from -20°C to +120°C. Hydraulic oil is indicated as the working medium.
When determining the allowable temperature of the complete system, the parameters of hoses, seals, fittings, valves, and other components must also be checked. The allowable working conditions of the entire installation are limited by its weakest component.
Standard BS5200 / ISO 8434-6
The adapter belongs to the group of BSP connections manufactured according to BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. Information about the standard facilitates the correct selection of mating elements and the identification of replacements.
When replacing an old element, one should check not only the nominal size of the threads, but also their actual diameter, pitch, and the design of the sealing surfaces.
Application of the BSP 1.1/2" / 2" adapter
The adapter can be used wherever a direct transition between large BSP 1.1/2" and BSP 2" connections is required. The reducing design is used both in the construction of new installations and during the repair and modernization of existing systems.
- power hydraulic systems,
- industrial installations,
- hydraulic power units,
- agricultural machinery,
- forestry machinery,
- construction machinery,
- oil installations,
- repairs of hydraulic systems,
- modernization of machinery and equipment,
- installations requiring the reduction of large BSP connections.
One reduction instead of several adapters
The direct BSP 1.1/2" / 2" adapter allows changing the diameter using a single body. This reduces the need for several subsequent adapters and shortens the entire connection.
Fewer adapters also mean fewer threaded connections that require correct assembly. This is particularly important for large connections, where subsequent elements can significantly increase the dimensions of the entire assembly.
Alternative designations for the BSP 1.1/2" / 2" adapter
When looking for a spare part, the designations used in the catalogs of various manufacturers can be helpful. For the presented adapter, the HYDRON datasheet provides:
- Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.67.32.24,
- Vitillo: ARGG3224,
- type designation: 1B-24-32,
- alternative designation: XGR 1 1/2"-2".
Designations can facilitate the identification of an equivalent, but before using a replacement, one should always compare the full technical specifications of both products.
How to correctly select the BSP 1.1/2" / 2" adapter?
Before ordering, both elements of the installation should be carefully checked. For the presented model, the most important selection parameters are:
- first side: BSP 1.1/2" male,
- second side: BSP 2" male,
- external diameter of BSP 1.1/2": approximately 47.4-47.8 mm,
- external diameter of BSP 2": approximately 59.2-59.6 mm,
- sealing system: 60° cone,
- working pressure: maximum 100 bar,
- operating temperature: from -20°C to +120°C,
- material: free-cutting steel,
- surface protection: zinc plating with white passivation.
If the adapter is selected on the basis of an old element removed from the machine, it is worth measuring both threads with a caliper and checking their pitch. This allows minimizing the risk of confusing BSP with other inch connection standards.
Selecting a hydraulic hose for large BSP connections
When making a complete hydraulic hose, the thread size itself is not enough. You must also select the internal diameter of the hose, its design, allowable operating pressure, length, and the type of ends.
To prepare the appropriate configuration, you can use the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator, which allows selecting the hose and ends for a specific machine or installation.
BSP vs. other inch thread standards
During the repair of older machines, it is worth remembering that BSP is not the only inch thread standard used in hydraulics. BSPT, NPT, and JIC/UNF are also encountered.
A similar diameter or the same nominal designation in inches does not mean full compatibility. In case of an uncertain connection, check the thread pitch and its geometry before assembly.
