Description
Straight reducing connector MM BSP 1/4" / 3/8" 350 bar
Straight reducing connector MM BSP 1/4" / 3/8" is used for the direct connection of two hydraulic system components with different port sizes. On one side, there is an external BSP 1/4" thread, and on the other external BSP 3/8" thread.
The connector is made of free-cutting steel protected by zinc plating with white passivation. The connection uses a 60° sealing cone. The maximum working pressure is 350 bar, making the component suitable for use in high-pressure power hydraulic systems, provided that the allowable parameters for all other system components are maintained.

What is the BSP 1/4" to 3/8" reduction used for?
The connector allows for a transition from a smaller BSP 1/4" port to a larger BSP 3/8". Both ends are external threads, so the component is designed to work with corresponding internal threads.
A one-piece reduction is particularly practical during the modification or repair of an installation, when two interacting components have different port diameters. Instead of assembling a transition from several adapters, a single correctly selected component can be used.
Other diameter combinations can be found in the category straight and reducing BSP connectors.
BSP 1/4" and BSP 3/8" - actual thread diameters
One common mistake when selecting inch connectors is the direct conversion of the thread designation from inches to millimeters. In the case of BSP, the values 1/4" and 3/8" are nominal designations.
- BSP 1/4": the external thread is approximately 12,9-13,1 mm in diameter,
- BSP 3/8": the external thread is approximately 16,3-16,6 mm in diameter.
If the old connector does not have a legible marking, it is worth taking the first measurement with a caliper. Then, the thread pitch should be checked, as the diameter alone does not provide full certainty of identification.
60° cone and proper connection sealing
The connector uses a 60° sealing cone. This means that when selecting the mating component, attention must be paid not only to the BSP label and thread size, but also to the geometry of the sealing surface.
Two components may be mechanically screwed together and yet not form a proper hydraulic connection. Thread compatibility and the sealing method should always be verified before assembly.
350 bar - check the parameters of the entire system
The allowable working pressure for this variant is 350 bar. This is a parameter for the specific BSP 1/4" / 3/8" reduction, so this value should not be automatically applied to other sizes of connectors.
In a complete circuit, the allowable pressure is determined by the component with the lowest rating. Factors such as hoses, fittings, valves, quick couplings, and other adapters must be taken into account.
Ready-made solutions for hydraulic systems can also be found in the category crimped hydraulic hoses.
Does a 3/8" to 1/4" reduction affect flow?
The transition from BSP 3/8" to BSP 1/4" means a reduction in the available cross-section. When selecting a reduction, the required oil flow should therefore also be checked.
If the cross-section is too small relative to the flow in a given circuit, the medium velocity and pressure losses may increase. Therefore, the thread size should not be the only criterion for selecting a reduction.
Free-cutting steel with zinc plating
The connector was made of free-cutting steel and protected with zinc plating with white passivation. Such a design is commonly used in steel connection elements for power hydraulics.
When working in an environment with specific corrosion requirements, the material of all system parts should be appropriately selected.
Working temperature range
The product datasheet specifies a working temperature from -20°C to +120°C. The indicated medium is hydraulic oil.
Please note that the allowable temperature of the complete installation may be lower if the temperature limits of the hose, seal, or another component are more restrictive.
BS5200 / ISO 8434-6 - BSP connector standard
The connector has been assigned to the standard BS5200 / ISO 8434-6. This information helps with the technical identification of the connection and the selection of compatible components.
When replacing an existing component, it is best to compare not only the product name but also the thread diameter, pitch, sealing cone, pressure, and material.
Typical application of the BSP 1/4" / 3/8" connector
The reduction is intended for making connections in hydraulic systems where two different BSP thread sizes occur. It can be used during the production of new systems, as well as for repairs and modernizations.
- power hydraulics,
- agricultural and orchard machinery,
- forestry machinery,
- construction machinery,
- hydraulic power units,
- industrial equipment,
- oil installations,
- service and modification of hydraulic systems.
Interchangeable and catalog designations
When searching for an equivalent, the designations assigned to this configuration may be helpful:
- Rastelli-Raccordi: 34.67.06.04,
- Vitillo: ARGG0604,
- symbol: 1B-04-06,
- alternative designation: XGR 1/4"-3/8".
The catalog designation is helpful in searching for parts, but before using a replacement, the full technical parameters of both products should be compared.
How to choose a BSP 1/4" / 3/8" reduction without mistakes?
Before ordering, check respectively:
- whether both required ports are to be external threads,
- whether the smaller thread is BSP 1/4",
- whether the larger thread is BSP 3/8",
- the external diameter of both threads,
- the thread pitch,
- compliance of the 60° sealing cone,
- required working pressure,
- flow required by the given hydraulic circuit.
If you are selecting a part based on an old connector, do not rely solely on visual comparison. Caliper measurement and checking the thread pitch significantly reduce the risk of ordering the wrong variant.
Also choose the correct hydraulic hose
The thread type is only one of the parameters of a complete hose. Also important are the DN diameter, hose construction, required pressure, hose length, and the type of both fittings.
You can prepare the correct variant in the HYDRON hydraulic hose configurator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What threads does the BSP 1/4" / 3/8" connector have?
The connector has two external threads: BSP 1/4" on one side and BSP 3/8" on the other.
What is the maximum working pressure?
The maximum working pressure specified for this connector is 350 bar.
How to recognize BSP 1/4" and BSP 3/8"?
The external BSP 1/4" thread is approximately 12,9-13,1 mm in diameter, and the BSP 3/8" is approximately 16,3-16,6 mm. For certain identification, the thread pitch should also be checked.
Does the connector have a sealing cone?
Yes. The connector has a 60° sealing cone, so the surface of the mating component should have compatible geometry.
What material is the reduction made of?
The connector is made of free-cutting steel protected by zinc plating with white passivation.
